The Liverpool Empire Theatre to welcome back audiences this August

The Liverpool Empire Theatre has announced it will be reopening its doors and welcoming back audiences on Thursday 5th August.

After being closed for over 16 months, the lights will finally come up and the curtain will rise again, as audiences are welcomed back for a sensational season of world-class entertainment.

The prestigious theatre is known and loved for hosting a breadth of high quality productions from musicals and drama to opera and dance, and this re-opening season doesn’t disappoint.

The re-opening season is set to be one of the Empire’s best yet with everything from hilarious comedy, toe-tapping concerts, and of course show-stopping musicals. Highlights include Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, set to enchant Liverpool audiences in September, and featuring a relaxed performance on 12 October; hit musicals Heathers and Hairspray coming this August; hilarious comedy from the minds of Penn and Teller and Mischief in Magic Goes Wrong this September; and we’re set to rock out once more with Rock of Ages, also in September. Looking further ahead, Christmas is set to be very special this year as Dreamgirls heads to Liverpool for the very first time this Christmas.

Diane Belding, the Empire’s Theatre Director said today “We are over the moon to announce our re-opening plans! We’ve missed live theatre and our audiences immensely. Our whole team have been touched by the support we’ve received from our community over the past few months.

We’ve seen how much live theatre has been missed in the region and can’t wait to give the people of Merseyside some much needed entertainment in the safest way possible.”

The Empire’s Creative Learning team has been hard at work to ensure that even though the venue has been closed, there has still been an exciting program of activities on offer. The Creative Learning team delivers opportunities and experiences that engage, educate and empower people of all abilities, ages, genders and races within the local community. Thanks to the hard work of the staff and practitioners, and with investment from the government’s Culture Recovery Fund, collaborative community projects have been able to take place. These include Drag Queen Story-Time, a free children’s event in association with Homotopia, and a soon to be revealed dance film featuring emerging dancers from the region.

Natalie Flynn, the Empire’s Senior Creative Learning Manager said: “The arts play such an important role in the health and wellbeing of our society. Thanks to the generous support of the Theatre Trust and the government’s Culture Recovery Fund we have been able to remain connected to our community. We have provided opportunities for 6000 primary school children to enjoy theatre experiences online, commissioned a new dance film which provided work for local emerging dance artists and relaunched our weekly participation programme for adults and children. We are delighted that our Youth Theatre production of Chess The Musical will form part of the venue reopening season on 13th and 14th August.

The return of live theatre also sees the return of the Liverpool Empire Theatre’s Price Promise ticket deals. Continuing the theatre’s commitment to making theatre affordable for all, a limited number of tickets will be available for some of the most popular shows for just £13.

As a See It Safely approved venue, audiences can feel reassured knowing the Liverpool Empire Theatre will always follow the latest government advice, including if necessary one-way systems, sanitising stations and enhanced cleaning. The theatre is now operating a contactless ticketing system with e-tickets being issued to customers within two weeks of their selected performance. This simple change allows the theatre to increase safety and hygiene as well as improve the overall booking experience. Visitors can also book with complete confidence knowing that if there are any further suspensions, tickets will remain fully valid for further exchanges or refunds.
