Liverpool ONE has announced exciting plans for a new play area at Chavasse Park for families to enjoy and explore called The Kingdom of the Liver Bird, taking its name from the mythical Liver Bird symbol of the city, and will cover approximately 1,010 sq m.
A planning application has now been submitted, with work expected to start early 2027.
The brand-new design will introduce a range of standout features, including a Liver Bird Tower with Tube Slide, which is a striking tower feature inspired by the city’s mythical Liver Bird, featuring an integrated tube slide.
Children will also be able to access an elevated zipline experience via a dedicated launch tower, alongside a Fishermen’s Village and Trampoline Area that offers a vibrant, maritime-inspired play zone with high-energy trampoline features.
The site layout includes The Castle with Slide, a themed castle structure designed for active climbing, exploration and a sweeping slide feature, as well as a School of Fish Climbing Structure, which offers an immersive climbing experience inspired by the movement of a school of fish.
Landscaped play elements such as Tunnels and Hills will also be installed to support exploration, movement and discovery across the park terrain.
The new space will provide a mix of play opportunities for different ages, abilities and backgrounds, with inclusive design embedded throughout, and guest feedback has helped to shape and refine the overall concept.
Interactive and sensory play features include communication tubes between towers to encourage social interaction, textured panels for exploration and creative discovery, and integrated musical elements, as well as busy boards, a rotating mirror and play boxes.
A range of elevated viewpoints alongside accessible ground-level experiences ensures children can explore and experience the play space in different ways.
A storytelling competition will also be delivered in collaboration with local schools to develop the narrative of the play area and bring to life its journey from water to land, with insights from the competition informing the continued development of the design.
Retail Destination Enhancements and Family Leisure Investments
Brendan Hattam, Centre Director at Liverpool ONE, said:
“We’re excited to share plans for this major new play space at Chavasse Park, which will further strengthen Liverpool ONE’s family offering and create even more opportunities to spend quality time together outdoors.
“The Kingdom of the Liver Bird has been designed with local families in mind, encouraging fun-filled experiences inspired by a symbol that sits at the heart of the city’s identity.
“We’re proud to be investing in new family facilities that enhance our offering here and this play area will create a vibrant space for children of all ages to enjoy.”
The addition of this specialised infrastructure represents a significant upgrade to the existing green spaces within the multi-use retail complex.
By generating a unique, culturally relevant landmark, the destination aims to increase dwell time for regional visitors and local residents during peak holiday periods.
Community Co-Creation Initiatives and Educational Partnerships

The decision to involve regional educational institutions ensures that the final aesthetic execution resonates directly with local youth populations.
By translating school submissions into physical design cues, the development team establishes an immediate sense of community ownership over the urban space.
Progress updates regarding the local authority planning approvals and subsequent construction phases will be shared on the official retail centre digital channels.
