A major summer programme celebrating Liverpool’s world-famous music scene is coming to the National Museums Liverpool as the Museum of Liverpool launches its new Summer of Sound series in partnership with the legendary The Cavern Club.
Running from 24 July to 29 August, the six-week programme will feature live gigs, special events, talks and music-themed entertainment at the city’s iconic waterfront museum, with a soon-to-be-announced legendary Liverpool act set to headline the season.
The headline performance will take place on Saturday, 15 August, in an intimate setting inside the Museum of Liverpool.
Members of National Museums Liverpool will be the first to hear the announcement and gain exclusive early access to tickets.
Summer of Sound forms part of National Museums Liverpool’s 40th anniversary celebrations and aims to showcase the depth and diversity of Liverpool’s musical heritage, from pioneering artists of the past to the city’s newest emerging talent.
The Quarrymen, STONE and Ian Prowse among first acts announced
The programme opens on 24 July with Tom Kelly’s Musical Bingo, a weekly live music bingo experience combining classic tracks, live performances and audience participation.
On 25 July, Liverpool rock ‘n’ roll pioneers The Quarrymen will launch the live music series with an evening of songs and stories celebrating the sounds of 1950s Liverpool and the roots of Beatlemania.
BBC Introducing presenter Dave Monks will host a showcase of Liverpool’s rising music talent on 1 August, headlined by fast-rising four-piece STONE, known for their energetic blend of punk, garage rock and electronica.
A celebration of Merseybeat arrives on 8 August with “This is Merseybeat”, a live show revisiting the music that helped launch the British Invasion and defined the Swinging Sixties.
On 15 August, former Pele and Amsterdam frontman Ian Prowse will bring his popular Cavern open mic night, The Monday Club, to the museum for a special one-off event celebrating Liverpool’s grassroots music scene and original songwriting.
International Beatleweek and open-call performances complete line-up
The season concludes on 29 August as International Beatleweek takes over the Museum of Liverpool, bringing together leading Beatles tribute acts from across the globe.
Local musicians will also have the opportunity to perform during the series through the return of Museum Sessions Live, an open-call initiative offering artists the chance to play in the museum’s Atrium space across multiple dates throughout the summer.
Kerry Williams, Head of Partnerships at National Museums Liverpool, said:
“This summer, we’re celebrating National Museums Liverpool’s 40th anniversary in style, with a host of amazing live music events.
“Summer of Sound heralds Liverpool’s musical legacy, while also championing the very best in new music that the city has to offer.
“With our headliner still to be announced, we’re sure that this one-off performance will be a special night to remember, all taking place in the unique space of the Museum of Liverpool at the waterfront.”
