The Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse theatres continue their reopening plans, as they welcome a season of new writing at the Playhouse and regulars return to the Everyman’s bar spaces.

A New Works Showcase will mark the re-opening of the Playhouse Studio, as writers from the 2019-20 Playwrights programme are finally given the opportunity to showcase their work. Eight playwrights will see their work come to life in the Playhouse Studio from 15-18 September.

As part of Playhouse Studio season in 2021, in collaboration with Everyman & Playhouse and the Royal Court Liverpool, BlackFest perform a rehearsed reading of four works from the BlackFest New Writers Programme from 23-25 September. Homotopia will also host an exciting mix of queer artists in the Studio on Friday 12 November, as part of their artist development programme QueerCore.

Liverpool’s favourite all singing, all dancing nana visits the Studio, as An Evening with Nana Funk (1-2 Oct) shows audiences being awesome transcends age.  The new works series across the season also features a host of research and development sessions with a diverse selection of artists from across the city, giving theatre makers the opportunity to develop their work.

Joining an already busy schedule of shows on the theatre’s main stages, Drag Race UK Season Two runner-up Bimini Bom Boulash (7 Oct), comedian Sindhu Vee (23 Oct), Eric & Ern (18-20 Nov) and John Shuttleworth (20 Apr 2022) all perform live at the Playhouse.

On the Everyman main stage, Orson Welles’ War of the Worlds (19-23 Oct) is playfully re-imagined by Rhum and Clay Theatre Company for our era of Fake News and ‘alternative facts’.

Regulars are back in the bars at the Everyman, as the theatre’s favourite drag artist Filla Crack presents her Drag Cabaret Halloween (29 Oct) and Drag Cabaret Christmas (18-22 Dec) specials. DBY Interactive Events bring three Murder Mystery nights – a spy-themed night on 18 September, followed by delightfully deadly Halloween (30 Oct) and Christmas (17 Dec) evenings.

Reel Tours: Mega Movie Quiz in a Theatre is back to its monthly slot from September, and A Lovely Word also returns to the Everyman, following a successful series of online and outdoor performances across lockdown. Joining the regular line-up is a brand new ‘un-brie-lieveable’ selection of cheese nights at the Everyman with Liverpool Cheese Club hosted by Liverpool Cheese Company, starting on 17 & 18 August with a Women in Cheese special.

Out of the theatres, Falling Door Theatre – a company founded by two Young Everyman Playhouse graduates, present The Streets Where We Live (18-29 Aug), as audiences join a walking performance around historical landmarks in Liverpool with historian Laurence Westgaph. A binaural audio adventure How to Use a Den (15 Jul-30 Sept) takes kids aged 5-7 on a journey in a den made entirely in their own home, with All Things Considered Theatre.

Mark Da Vanzo, chief executive at Liverpool and Merseyside Theatres Trust, said: “It is wonderful to see such an array of talent on our stages over the next few months. Our theatres have a long, proud history of championing new work and we can’t wait to reopen the wonderful Playhouse Studio in the heart of the city to provide another platform to support our creative communities”.

Tickets for shows at the Everyman & Playhouse are on sale from 12pm on Tuesday 20 July. For more information and to book tickets, visit www.everymanplayhouse.com/whats-on.
