Families gathered in force to celebrate Southport Armed Forces Day on 28th June 2026.
The biggest Armed Forces Day event in the North West saw people enjoy a variety of activities and events throughout the town centre.
They were buoyed by the news, announced the previous day, that National Armed Forces Day will be taking place in Southport in 2027.
Armed Forces Day began with a Drumhead Service outside The Atkinson on Lord Street, led by Rev Ben Dyer, the Vicar at Christ Church.
Following the service, there was an Armed Forces Day Parade which saw veterans and cadets marching along Chapel Street, London Street and Nevill Street, forming up for an inspection at Southport Pier.
There they were met by dignitaries, including Merseyside Lord Lieutenant Peter Oliver OBE, High Sheriff of Merseyside Hazell Snell, Sefton Mayor Cllr Jen Corcoran, Southport MP Patrick Hurley, Southport Town Crier Kev Ruane MBE, eight-year-old Soldier Frank, and more.
King’s Gardens and the Promenade were packed with a day of live music and entertainment, giant inflatables and attractions, military vehicles, military displays, food stalls, an expansive artisan village, and crafts, and more.
The Atkinson on Lord Street opened specially for Southport Armed Forces Day.
This year, the focus turned to the First World War with a special tribute to the story of The Angels of Mons, bringing a distinct 1914 atmosphere.
Visitors were able to enjoy a rich mix of experiences, including The Angels of Mons exhibition, which opened on Saturday (27th June 2026).
World War I re-enactors brought history to life, with displays from the Military Vehicle Trust and a fascinating talk detailing the family history of John Westhead.
There were free drop-in craft activities for families and charity stalls to explore.
Reflections on Service and the Meaning of Standing Watch

The Drumhead Service provided an opportunity for attendees to reflect on the personal sacrifices made by service personnel and their families across generations.
Rev Ben Dyer told the crowds gathered:
“Thank you to veterans who have served in years gone by. Thank you for serving armed forces personnel.
“Thank you to reservists, cadets, families, and all those whose lives are all bound up in the armed forces community.
“One of the images that comes to mind on a day like today is the image of ‘standing watch’. In every generation, there are men and women who are asked to stand watch for others.
“Sometimes literally, on land, on sea, in the air, through long hours of vigilance, through training, readiness and discipline, sometimes in places of danger, sometimes in places of work that are unseen by most of us, but still necessary for the safety and freedom of many.
“Most of us will never fully know what that service costs. We may see the uniform, the parade, the ceremony.
“But behind all of that are ordinary human lives – the families who wait, the children who miss their parents, spouses who carry anxiety, veterans who live with memories, and service personnel who bear responsibilities most of us never have to carry.
“So today we honour that service.
“We do not take it for granted.
“We recognise that peace, security and freedom are not automatic.
“They’ve often been guarded, protected and preserved by the commitment and courage of others.
“In our prayers today we ask, again and again, God, give peace.”
Community Support and Looking Ahead to National Armed Forces Day 2027

Regional leaders and organisers praised the local turnout and expressed pride regarding the town selection for the upcoming national milestone.
Peter Oliver OBE said:
“Armed Forces Day 2026 in Southport was a day dedicated to honouring veterans and Service Personnel.
“It began with a Drumhead multi-faith military service, a marching parade and a range of activities and displays, providing an opportunity for the community to come together in celebration of the UK’s Armed Forces.
“It was an extra special event given the incredible news that Southport will host the national Armed Forces Day next year.
“With thanks to everyone who organised, supported and took part. The community spirit could not have been stronger and thanks also to Frank The Soldier for joining us.”
Southport Royal British Legion President Serena Silcock-Prince said:
“What an incredible Armed Forces Day 2026! I’m so proud to have been part of such a special day.
“A huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard behind the scenes, volunteered their time, supported the event and came along to celebrate our Armed Forces.
