A new traditional pub is set to arrive on Bold Street, with The Angel preparing to transform the former Maggie May’s Café into what its owners believe will be the street’s first true pub.
While Bold Street has long been known for its independent shops, cafés, restaurants and bars, the team behind The Angel says it has never been home to a traditional boozer.
The new venue will take over the former Maggie May’s site after the family-run café closed at the end of 2025, bringing a completely different concept to one of Liverpool city centre’s busiest streets.
A Victorian-inspired pub with original features
The team behind The Angel say they are passionate about traditional pubs and Victorian architecture, with plans to create an authentic period setting.
As work has progressed inside the building, a number of original 19th-century architectural features have been uncovered and will become part of the finished design.
Designer and director Rob Gutmann has travelled across the UK sourcing reclaimed pub fittings, architectural salvage and antiques to help recreate the feel of a Victorian public house that could have stood on Bold Street more than a century ago.
One of the first exterior additions is a reclaimed pub sign from a long-lost Salford pub, which has already been installed outside the building.
New chapter for a familiar Liverpool building
Before becoming Maggie May’s, the property spent many years as a vinyl record store, making it a familiar landmark for generations of Liverpool visitors.
The Angel will feature entrances on both Bold Street and Wood Street, with work continuing to transform the historic building into a traditional pub.
An official opening date has not yet been announced, but the project is already generating interest as it brings a new concept to one of Liverpool’s best-known streets.
