Liverpool will welcome Europe’s best wheelchair basketball players next year when the IWBF Wheelchair Basketball European Championships 2027 take over the M&S Bank Arena.
The major international sporting event will be staged in the city from 11–19 September 2027, bringing nine days of elite wheelchair basketball to Liverpool.
It will be the first time the European Championships have been held in the UK since 2015 and the biggest wheelchair basketball event staged on home soil in more than a decade.
A total of 18 of Europe’s leading men’s and women’s teams will compete at the M&S Bank Arena, with much more than the European title at stake.
Qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games will also be on the line, giving Great Britain’s men’s and women’s teams the opportunity to fight for a place in LA in front of a home crowd.
Wheelchair basketball is one of the fastest and most physical sports on the Paralympic programme, combining high-speed breaks, hard-fought rebounds, tactical battles and dramatic finishes.
Players can change direction at pace, chairs collide and possession can switch in seconds, making it one of the most exciting spectator sports on the Paralympic programme.
Liverpool 2027 is being billed as an event for everyone, from established basketball supporters to families and first-time spectators looking to experience international sport in the city.
Great Britain aiming for glory on home soil
The Championships will give British supporters the opportunity to watch both GB teams compete on home soil at a crucial point on the road to the LA Paralympic Games.
Great Britain’s men head towards Liverpool 2027 as Paris 2024 Paralympic silver medallists, their best Paralympic result in the sport for 28 years.
They also won the 2023 European Championship title and were crowned world champions in 2018.
The GB women have established themselves among Europe’s leading nations too, winning European silver in both 2023 and 2025 and finishing fifth at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Both teams are currently competing at the 2026 IWBF World Championships in Ottawa, Canada, as preparations continue towards next year’s European Championships.
Liverpool will also have a local interest when the tournament arrives.
Liverpool’s Abdi Jama is part of the Great Britain set-up and is representing GB at this year’s World Championships. The experienced Paralympian has been a major figure in the national team for a number of years.
Great Britain’s confirmed World Championship squads also include Greater Manchester’s Laurie Williams and Stockport’s Henley Cavanagh.

“Wheelchair basketball is incredibly fast, it’s physical, and there’s so much happening on court that you can barely take your eyes off the game. There’s the noise of the wheels, the collisions, the crowd and the speed of the players – it’s an incredible atmosphere. You can go from one end of the court to the other in seconds and the whole game can change in a heartbeat. I’ve played this sport for more than 25 years and it still gives me a buzz. So come along, bring the family and get behind the teams – you’re in for a cracking day out!”

Tickets for Liverpool 2027
Multi-day passes for the Championships are on sale now, with single-day tickets set to be released in 2027.
An introductory Founder Offer currently gives supporters an All-Access Pass for £99 for adults and £18 for children aged two to 15, covering every game across all nine days. The offer runs until 30 September.
There are also separate five-day group-stage and four-day finals passes available. Accessible tickets are sold at the standard ticket price and include one complimentary companion ticket.
The Championships will take place at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena from Saturday 11 September to Sunday 19 September 2027.
