Unity Theatre has launched a new cinema programme in partnership with Liverpool Doc Club.
The initiative introduces regular independent film screenings to the heart of the city and re-establishes a consistent platform for documentary cinema in Liverpool.
For the first time in many years, film lovers can once again experience a regular programme of independent cinema at the Unity.
Liverpool, once known for its vibrant cinema scene, has long been without a dedicated arthouse venue.
This initiative responds to growing demand for accessible, high-quality screenings and signals a renewed commitment to big-screen culture in the city.
Bruno Castro, film curator at Imagine Futures CIC/Liverpool Doc Club, said:
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with the Unity Theatre to host the Liverpool Doc Club.
“We’ll be screening the best documentaries in one of the city’s most independent, engaged and welcoming venues.
“We took great care in curating a programme that aligns with the Unity Theatre’s ethos.
“Folktales engage with other offerings by the Unity and explore what it means to be human today.
“Cinema can add a different space for the idea that the Unity is a house of ideas and feelings, and it is important to contribute to this. Documentary cinema, in particular, has extraordinary potential.”

The curated season presents award-winning and previously unseen-in-Liverpool films, offering audiences the opportunity to discover powerful, storytelling.
Highlights include Folktales (2025), from Academy Award®-nominated directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady.
Folktales, shortlisted for the 2026 Oscars, follows teenagers spending an unconventional gap year in the Arctic wilderness, learning dog sledging and survival skills.
Through immersive storytelling and striking cinematography, the film examines identity, belonging and resilience in the modern world.
Affordable independent cinema supported by BFI Film Audience Network
Tickets are priced between £7 and £10, ensuring the screenings remain affordable and accessible.
The programme is supported by Film Hub North with National Lottery funding on behalf of the BFI Film Audience Network, alongside backing from the Documentary Film Council.
Plans are in place to establish an ongoing programme of regular screenings at the Unity, embedding independent film exhibition within Liverpool’s cultural landscape.
The initiative is spearheaded by Imagine Futures CiC, a community interest company working across culture, creativity and education to widen access and opportunity for people of all ages.
Through its partnership with the Unity Theatre, the organisation aims to position film as a vital and permanent part of the venue’s artistic identity.
