Halton Film Festival to bring a week of cinema to Runcorn and Widnes

Halton is set to celebrate its growing connection with the screen this September with the launch of the brand-new Halton Film Festival.

Taking place from 21 to 27 September 2026, the week-long festival will bring classic films, contemporary storytelling and community-led screenings to venues across Runcorn and Widnes.

The festival forms part of Culture 26 – Celebrating Halton Made Creativity, a year-long programme showcasing the borough’s creative heritage, talent and cultural future.

Inspired by Halton’s growing reputation as a filming location through the Hollywood in Halton campaign, the new festival will celebrate the borough’s appearances on screen while also shining a spotlight on local filmmakers, communities and stories.

Audiences can expect a varied programme featuring classic films, comedies, family favourites, sing-along screenings and new short films created by emerging talent.

Screenings are expected to take place at venues including the newly redeveloped Brindley Theatre, alongside collaborations with Reel Cinema Widnes, with the possibility of outdoor drive-in cinema experiences also being explored.

The festival programme will also use film to encourage conversations around important social issues, including women’s safety and the importance of creating safer streets for women and girls.

Among the locally produced films being screened will be Squeaky Bum, directed by Alicia Forde, who features as the face of the Made In Halton film campaign.

Set on the day of the Euros semi-final, the short film follows cocky teenager Kyle as he is forced to confront grief and the shadow of his father when a school puppet show strikes unexpectedly close to home.

Halton has developed an impressive screen legacy over the years, with productions including Peaky Blinders, Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps and Millions all having filmed in locations across the borough.

Organisers hope the Halton Film Festival will build on that legacy while giving a new generation of filmmakers, performers and creatives the opportunity to be inspired by cinema closer to home.

The Halton Film Festival takes place from 21 to 27 September 2026 at venues across Runcorn and Widnes.
