This August, Liverpool’s iconic Penny Lane will come alive once again as the Penny Lane Weekender returns for its third year, a three-day grassroots festival celebrating independent music and local talent.
Founded in 2023 by Liverpool post-punk band Pleasure Island, the event was initially a one-off gig at Dovedale Towers, the former home of Freddie Mercury, but quickly evolved into a multi-venue celebration due to overwhelming demand. Now an annual fixture, the festival spans multiple venues along and around Penny Lane, showcasing rising acts from Liverpool and beyond.

What began as a platform for the city’s homegrown talent has grown into a respected event within the UK’s independent music scene. The 2025 edition promises an eclectic lineup spanning indie, punk, electronica, dance, and pop, featuring standout names like The DSM IV, sci-fi rockers SILENT-K, Japanese psych band Qujaku, and Pleasure Island themselves.
Organiser (and frontman of Pleasure Island) Sean Regan says:
“This festival has been a shock for us all, given how we started it only two years ago as a gig upstairs in a pub! We’ve been very fortunate that the community has gotten behind this in such an incredible way, we just hope we can keep making it better and do everyone proud. Liverpool already has great festivals, but this is a part of town which hasn’t had a lot of love, despite its musical legacy. Everyone who comes here tells us what a great place it is, with an amazing atmosphere that is perfect for a weekend of live music. We’re really looking forward to seeing everyone again.”
With over 125 grassroots venues closing in the UK last year alone (Music Venue Trust), events like the Penny Lane Weekender are more vital than ever. The festival not only champions emerging artists but continues to build on the rich musical heritage of Penny Lane — a place synonymous with creativity, community, and cultural impact.
