Merseyrail has achieved accredited status under the Liverpool City Region Fair Employment Charter, recognising the rail operator’s commitment to fair, inclusive and healthy working practices.
Only a small number of organisations have achieved accredited status so far, placing Merseyrail among those helping to set the standard locally.
The Fair Employment Charter is designed to raise expectations across the Liverpool City Region, and accreditation confirms that Merseyrail is playing a leading role in driving positive change.
To achieve this status, Merseyrail provided clear evidence across four key areas: Fair, Just, Inclusive and Healthy.
Evidence of Real Workplace Impact

The independent panel looked beyond simple policies, focusing on real-world examples of how commitments are being put into practice and the tangible difference they are making for colleagues.
Merseyrail submitted more than 40 pieces of evidence to the panel, including case studies, internal policies, and specific examples from across the business.
James Smith, HR Director at Merseyrail, said:
“We are incredibly proud to be recognised as an accredited fair employer.
“This reflects the values our colleagues bring to work every day and the part they play in creating a workplace that is fair, supportive and inclusive.
“Looking after our people is not a tick‑box exercise, it’s a fundamental part of what makes Merseyrail a great place to work.”
Supporting Staff to Enhance Passenger Experience
By supporting its people, Merseyrail believes it is better placed to support its passengers and contribute positively to the communities of the Liverpool City Region.
The accreditation provides external confidence that the organisation is moving in the right direction, ensuring that the everyday actions of colleagues across the network result in lasting change.
This latest recognition underscores the operator’s ongoing efforts to foster a supportive environment within the regional transport sector.
As the charter continues to expand, Merseyrail stands as a primary example of how regional businesses can align their operational goals with high standards of employment ethics.
