Film crews have been busy in Liverpool city centre as production continues on Hercule, a major new BBC drama based around Agatha Christie’s legendary detective Hercule Poirot.
Images captured were from the set as crews took over Exchange Flags, with filming equipment, production vehicles and large green screens transforming the historic city centre location.
Filming took place around Exchange Flags on Sunday, 23 August, with the area behind Liverpool Town Hall becoming the latest city location to provide the backdrop for a major television production.
The upcoming six-part series will see Edward Bluemel take on the role of a younger Hercule Poirot, following the famous Belgian detective during his early cases in London before he becomes one of the world’s most renowned fictional detectives.
Bluemel is known for appearances in productions including My Lady Jane, Killing Eve and Sex Education.
He will be joined by an impressive cast including James Nesbitt, Tamsin Greig, Jack Gleeson, James D’Arcy, Calvin Demba, Mawaan Rizwan, Henry Ashton, Phil Dunning, Guy Remmers and Rebecca Rittenhouse.
The series will explore three of Agatha Christie’s early stories while following Poirot’s developing friendship with Captain Arthur Hastings and his early encounters with Scotland Yard’s James Japp.
Described as both a study of Poirot himself and a portrait of Britain between the wars, the production is being made by Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited for the BBC and BritBox North America.
Liverpool will play a major role in bringing the period drama to life, with the city confirmed as the primary filming location for the series.
The latest shoot also resulted in temporary restrictions around the area, with a section of High Street near Exchange Flags closed to allow filming to take place.
Liverpool has become a familiar sight on screens around the world, with its historic streets and architecture regularly used by major film and television productions.
The city has already welcomed a string of productions during 2026, and the arrival of Hercule adds another high-profile BBC drama to the growing list being filmed across Liverpool.
Hercule is expected to premiere on BBC iPlayer and BBC One in 2027, with the series also available on BritBox in North America.
