Liverpool John Lennon Airport prepares for record-breaking summer as 930,000 passengers set to travel

Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA) is preparing for another record-breaking summer, with almost 930,000 passengers expected to pass through the terminal between the start of the school holidays and the end of August.

The figure represents a 7% increase compared with the same period last year, as families from across the North West and North Wales head overseas during the airport’s busiest time of the year.

Despite the recent spell of good weather in the UK and continued concerns across the aviation industry surrounding the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, passenger demand at Liverpool has remained strong.

Almost 2.7 million passengers used the airport during the first six months of 2026, an increase of 2% compared with the same period in 2025.

Thousands of travellers are expected to fly from Liverpool over the coming weeks, taking advantage of the wide choice of destinations available and the airport’s award-winning customer experience.

Mediterranean destinations and popular sunshine resorts are expected to dominate the airport’s busiest routes this summer. Alicante, Palma, Malaga, Faro, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Barcelona and Dalaman are among the destinations forecast to attract the highest passenger numbers.

High volumes of traffic are also expected on routes closer to home, including flights to Dublin and Belfast.

Airport management is reminding passengers to allow sufficient time to complete their journey through the terminal during peak periods. Travellers are advised to arrive between two and three hours before their scheduled departure time and to carefully consider which items are packed in their hold luggage.

The Civil Aviation Authority is currently encouraging passengers to “pack right for a safe flight” following an increase in the number of aviation safety incidents involving lithium batteries.

Power banks and other devices containing lithium batteries must not be placed in checked-in luggage stored in the aircraft hold. They should instead be carried in hand luggage, allowing cabin crew to take swift action should a device begin to overheat.

Following the installation of the latest-generation security screening equipment at Liverpool last year, departing passengers can leave liquids and large electronic devices, including laptops and tablets, inside their hand luggage when passing through security.

Passengers are also no longer required to place liquids in a clear plastic bag. However, individual liquid containers remain limited to a maximum capacity of 100ml.

Robin Tudor, Head of PR at LJLA commented:

“Whilst it has been a particularly challenging time for the aviation industry in recent months, passenger numbers here have remained higher than last year and we expect a very busy summer holiday period once again with the potential to break last year’s record numbers of passengers.

We look forward to welcoming thousands of the region’s holidaymakers from across the North West and North Wales over the coming weeks, all choosing to fly from Liverpool and take advantage of our award winning airport customer experience.”
