Liverpool will pay tribute to the UK’s military community with a week of commemorative events to mark Armed Forces Week, beginning Monday 23 June.
The week will commence with a flag-raising ceremony at Liverpool Town Hall, where the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Barbara Murray, will hoist the Armed Forces flag. The event will follow a civic reception attended by senior representatives from the Armed Forces, Merchant Navy, and Royal British Legion.
As part of Reserves Day, Liverpool City Council will host a special reception for staff who volunteer in the Armed Forces. The Lord Mayor will welcome them to the Town Hall in recognition of their service.
The city’s annual Armed Forces service will take place on Saturday 28 June at Liverpool Parish Church, attended by invited guests. Afterwards, at around 11am, the Band of the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, the Liverpool Scottish Association, veterans and cadets will parade at the Pier Head. Members of the public are encouraged to come along and watch the display in front of the iconic Three Graces.
To round off the week, the Town Hall, Cunard Building, and St George’s Hall will be illuminated in red, white and blue from 27 to 30 June in honour of Armed Forces personnel past and present.
Lord Mayor, Cllr Barbara Murray, said:
“We are proud to mark the long association Liverpool has had with the Armed Forces.
“Current and past service personnel have made an invaluable contribution to the safety and security of countries around the world.
“We owe them all a debt of gratitude for their personal sacrifices in making the world a safer place for us all.”
Armed Forces Champion, Cllr Christine Banks, added:
“Armed Forces Week is an opportunity to thank the individuals who put their lives on the line to protect others.
“In an increasingly uncertain world, we need to be thankful of their work more than ever.”
