Chess enthusiasts and curious beginners will have a unique opportunity to test their tactical skills against elite grandmasters on the streets of Liverpool this month as part of a major seasonal animation programme.
The interactive Chess Challenge experiences are scheduled to take over two of the city centre’s most prominent public squares, forming a key highlight of the wider Celebrating Summer festival curated by the Liverpool Business Improvement District (BID) Company.
The activities will begin on Friday, 26th June 2026, at Williamson Square, where organisers will host simultaneous display exhibitions that allow members of the public to go head-to-head with British Chess Grandmaster Daniel Gormally and FIDE Master Glenn House.
The action will subsequently move to the Commercial District on Sunday, 28th June 2026, when qualified chess coaches Dylan Mize and Michael Green will lead an afternoon of completely free public coaching sessions from 1 pm until 4 pm at Horton House, situated within Exchange Flags.
To encourage widespread community participation, more than 50 complete chess boards and sets will be deployed across the locations, creating a relaxed, welcoming environment where visitors can play friends or meet new opponents.
Profiling the Masters Heading to the Merseyside Boards
The upcoming summer events will bring distinct historical expertise to the city, drawing upon competitive experiences gathered at the highest international levels of the sport.
Grandmaster Daniel Gormally first learned the foundational rules of the game at the age of seven from his father, eventually rising through the national ranks to represent the senior English national team at both the 2005 European Team Chess Championship and the 2006 Chess Olympiad.
FIDE Master Glenn House took up competitive play relatively late at the age of 18, securing the British Amateur Prix in 1986 before achieving his formal international title in 2001 and claiming the British Senior title in 2015.
Though frequently remaining unbeaten across regional league fixtures, House has famously tested his skills across the decades against world-renowned legends of the game, including Fabiano Caruana, David Bronstein, Michael Adams, and Simon Williams.
A Multi-Week Programme of Free Cultural Activities Across the City
The strategic chess gatherings represent just one component of a broader, multi-week initiative designed to inject vibrant cultural activity across the heart of Liverpool between 18 June and 27 August 2026.
Weekly activations will rotate through distinct urban zones, spanning from Bold Street and the waterfront up to Hope Street, St George’s Quarter, Derby Square, and the Commercial District.
The diverse public schedule includes immersive sound baths at Tempest on Tithebarn, street food giveaways at Exchange Flags, pop-up mini golf courses, live musical showcases, interactive street theatre, and dedicated waterfront relaxation zones equipped with public deck chairs.
Katie Bentley, Director of Strategic Partnerships and Communications at Liverpool Business Improvement District Company, said:
“Celebrating Summer will add joy and activity for everyone in the city centre this summer. We want to keep this city centre accessible to everyone.
“Whether you want to dance to live music in the street, or have a quiet moment to chill and relax, there will be something for everyone and their family and friends.
“There will be animation and activity across the whole of the city.
“Our message is simple: get outside and relax, enjoy the city and everything it has to offer and it’s all free.”
