Widnes Market’s Student Trading Day 2026 has marked its most successful year to date, welcoming a record number of participating students from the borough and delivering an exceptional showcase of young entrepreneurial talent.
The annual event offers local students the opportunity to run their own business in a live trading environment, giving them valuable hands-on experience and contributing directly to their course assessments and wider business understanding.
This year, 140 students operated 38 fledgling businesses, selling a diverse range of products and services, from pre-loved handbags to car-wash packages.
Throughout the day, Widnes Market stallholders visited each student enterprise, judging them on creativity, presentation and commercial awareness.
Three awards were presented in recognition of outstanding performance: Best Marketing, Best Products, and Best Overall Stall.
Mentorship and Community Impact

The success of the day was bolstered by the collaboration between the students and established local professionals.
Widnes Market staff extended their thanks to the dedicated students and lecturers who contributed to the success of the event, and also expressed appreciation to the Widnes Market Traders who offered guidance, encouragement and great insights throughout the day.
This mentorship provided the students with a unique look at the realities of retail and commercial management.
By interacting with seasoned traders, the participants gained practical knowledge that goes beyond the classroom, helping to foster the next generation of business owners within the Halton region.
Trading for a Local Cause
Beyond the educational benefits, the event also served as a significant fundraising effort for the local community.
The day concluded with the announcement that the money raised by all student businesses had been pooled together to support a local cause.
A donation of £183.00 will now be made to Halton Haven Hospice, ensuring the students’ hard work has a lasting positive impact on the area.
With another successful year completed, preparations will soon begin for Student Trading Day 2027, promising even more opportunities for young entrepreneurs to shine.
The event continues to grow as a staple of the local calendar, proving that the future of the Widnes business community is in very capable hands.
