Kirkby town centre is set for a major transformation as construction begins on the area’s first-ever Lidl supermarket, bringing new shopping choice, investment and dozens of jobs to the local community.
The new Lidl store is being built on the former Telegraph Way car park site and marks a significant milestone in the ongoing regeneration of Kirkby town centre.
For years, many residents have travelled to neighbouring areas such as Maghull and Fazakerley to shop at Lidl stores.
Once complete, the new development will bring the popular discount retailer directly to Kirkby, offering local shoppers easier access to its range of affordable products.
The project forms part of the second phase of Knowsley Council’s town centre regeneration programme and follows the successful completion of a fully occupied 94,000 sq ft retail development nearby.
Kirkby Lidl Store Set to Create Jobs and Boost Town Centre
The multi-million-pound investment is expected to deliver around 40 new jobs when the supermarket opens, providing a welcome boost to the local economy.
Additional employment opportunities will also be created through a second retail unit being developed alongside the Lidl store.
The supermarket will feature a spacious sales floor, Lidl’s popular in-store bakery, customer toilets with baby-changing facilities and the retailer’s well-known Middle of Lidl section.
Designed with future sustainability in mind, the building will include rooftop solar panels alongside new landscaping, tree planting and shrubs around the site.
Shoppers will have access to dedicated accessible parking spaces, parent-and-child bays and nearby town centre parking facilities, including the refurbished multi-storey car park.
From 1 June, pedestrian diversions will be introduced while construction work takes place, with motorists currently using the site being directed to alternative nearby parking locations.
Kirkby Regeneration Continues with New Retail Investment
The arrival of Lidl is another significant step in the continued regeneration of Kirkby town centre, helping to expand retail choice and attract further investment into the area.
Lidl GB’s Regional Head of Property, Stuart Jardine, said the company had long identified Kirkby as a priority location.
He said:
“We’re absolutely thrilled to break ground in Kirkby.
“The area has long been a top-priority location for Lidl and we know that residents have eagerly awaited this moment.
“The new store will greatly enhance the offer to shoppers here, delivering not just great value at low prices but also new jobs, all while removing the added cost of having to travel out of town.”
Knowsley Council Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, Councillor Tony Brennan, welcomed the start of construction and said the development reflects feedback from local residents who wanted more retail choice in the town centre.
Alongside the construction project, Lidl is also inviting local schools to participate in its Lidl Foodies programme, a free initiative designed to encourage healthy eating and inspire young people to develop positive relationships with fresh fruit and vegetables.
The supermarket giant says it will continue to keep residents updated as work progresses on what will become one of the most anticipated additions to Kirkby town centre in recent years.
Once completed, the new Lidl is expected to become a key part of the town’s evolving retail offer while helping drive further economic growth and investment across the area.
