Tens of thousands of visitors descended on Southport over the Bank Holiday weekend as the Southport Air Show returned with two days of spectacular aviation displays and family entertainment.
Crowds travelled from across the UK to watch an impressive programme of aerial displays above Southport’s famous seafront, providing another welcome boost to the town’s visitor economy.
The Southport Air Show was the only event in the North West this year where visitors could see the world-famous RAF Red Arrows.
Despite challenging wet weather, the Red Arrows thrilled spectators with a full display on Saturday before returning for a reduced performance on Sunday.
The RAF Typhoon then brought the weekend to a dramatic conclusion, delivering a spectacular finale to two action-packed days of flying displays.
Away from the skies, visitors were able to enjoy a wide range of family-friendly activities, interactive exhibits and entertainment across the event site.
The popular Military Village gave visitors the opportunity to meet serving personnel, discover more about the Armed Forces, explore military equipment and take part in hands-on activities.
Local food and drink vendors were also on hand throughout the weekend, showcasing some of the region’s hospitality offer to thousands of visitors.
Following the success of this year’s Southport Air Show, attention is already turning to 2027, when the town will host the Armed Forces Day national event.
The landmark occasion will build on Southport’s longstanding connection with the Armed Forces and is expected to bring another major programme of events and visitors to the town.
Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economy and Skills, said:
“Thanks to our Tourism team who once again delivered another fantastic weekend for the town, welcoming tens of thousands of people to enjoy world-class flying displays and family fun.
“Major events such as the Air Show are enormously important to Southport and take months and months to plan. They attract visitors from across the country, support our economy and reinforce Southport’s reputation as a leading destination for major events.
“We are now looking forward to building on that success in 2027. This will be a landmark occasion for Southport and an opportunity to celebrate the town’s proud and longstanding connection with the Armed Forces.”
