Liverpool city centre was once again transformed for the filming of new Beatles drama Hamburg Days, with the Blue Angel on Seel Street made to resemble the famous Jacaranda club.
Filming took place across several locations in the city on Monday, 31 August, as production continued on the six-part drama exploring the formative years of The Beatles.
Actors spotted during the latest filming included Rhys Mannion as John Lennon, Liverpool actor and musician Ellis Murphy as Paul McCartney, Darci Shaw as Cynthia Lennon and German actress Lea Drinda as Astrid Kirchherr.
One of the most striking transformations could be seen on Seel Street, where the exterior around the Blue Angel was dressed to recreate The Jacaranda, the legendary Liverpool venue closely associated with The Beatles during their early years.
The Jacaranda was opened by Allan Williams, who became The Beatles’ first manager, and played an important part in the band’s story before their trips to Hamburg.
Scenes were also filmed around Ye Cracke on Rice Street, another Liverpool location with strong links to John Lennon.
The historic pub was a regular haunt for Lennon and fellow art student Stuart Sutcliffe during their time at Liverpool College of Art, with the pair known to spend time there during their student days.
Filming also took place around the former Liverpool College of Art on Hope Street, where Lennon studied from 1957 and met Stuart Sutcliffe, who would later become the original bass guitarist in The Beatles.
The latest scenes follow filming near Liverpool Lime Street Station last week, when Rhys Mannion was pictured in character as a young John Lennon getting into a taxi on Lord Nelson Street.
At the end of Monday’s filming on Seel Street, members of the cast and production were also seen applauding together as filming wrapped, bringing the latest spell of Hamburg Days filming in Liverpool to a close.
What is Hamburg Days about?
Hamburg Days tells the story of The Beatles before worldwide fame, focusing on the period that helped transform the young Liverpool musicians into the band that would go on to become a global phenomenon.
Set during the early 1960s, the drama explores the group’s formative experiences in Hamburg’s St Pauli district and their relationships with figures including German photographer Astrid Kirchherr and artist and musician Klaus Voormann.
The series is partly inspired by Voormann’s autobiography, with Voormann also working as an exclusive consultant on the production.
Alongside Rhys Mannion and Ellis Murphy, the young Beatles cast includes Harvey Brett as George Harrison, Patrick Gilmore as Pete Best and Louis Landau as Stuart Sutcliffe.
Further cast members include Asa Butterfield as Brian Epstein, Jonny Lee Miller as Jim McCartney, Christine Tremarco as Aunt Mimi, Darci Shaw as Cynthia Lennon and Louis McCartney as Ringo Starr.
Filming for the production has taken place across Liverpool, Hamburg and Munich.
The six-part series will be shown in the UK on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, with a broadcast date yet to be announced.
