John Lennon actor Rhys Mannion spotted filming new Beatles drama in Liverpool

Filming for a major new drama about the early years of The Beatles has been taking place in Liverpool, with actor Rhys Mannion spotted in character as John Lennon outside Lime Street Station.

Filming for Hamburg Days continued in Liverpool on Friday, 28 August, with scenes taking place around Lord Nelson Street near Lime Street Station.

Mannion, who is taking on the role of a young John Lennon in the six-part series, was photographed during a scene which appeared to involve his character getting a taxi outside Liverpool Lime Street Station.

Dressed in period clothing for the production, the actor could be seen looking tired and weary as he made his way into the taxi during filming.

The scenes mark the latest major production to use Liverpool as a filming location, with Hamburg Days also shooting in Hamburg and Munich. Liverpool Film Office confirmed earlier this year that filming in the city was being facilitated by its team.

What is Hamburg Days about?

Hamburg Days is a six-part drama exploring the formative years of The Beatles, before John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison became global stars.

The story takes audiences back to the early 1960s and the band’s experiences in Hamburg’s St Pauli district, where the young Liverpool musicians spent long periods performing in clubs and developing the sound and stage presence that would ultimately help propel them to international fame.

The series is inspired by the autobiography of German artist and musician Klaus Voormann, who became closely associated with The Beatles during their time in Hamburg and is serving as an exclusive consultant on the production.

The BBC has acquired the series for BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK, while it is being produced by W&B Television and Turbine Studios and co-financed by AGC Television and German broadcaster ZDF.

Who plays The Beatles in Hamburg Days?

Irish actor Rhys Mannion, known for It Is in Us All and Freud’s Last Session, takes on the role of John Lennon.

He is joined by Liverpool singer-songwriter Ellis Murphy as Paul McCartney, Harvey Brett as George Harrison, Louis Landau as original bassist Stu Sutcliffe and Patrick Gilmore as Pete Best.

Further casting announced during the summer includes Asa Butterfield as Brian Epstein, Jonny Lee Miller as Jim McCartney, Christine Tremarco as Aunt Mimi, Darci Shaw as Cynthia Lennon and Louis McCartney as Ringo Starr.

Ryan Sampson will also play Liverpool promoter Alan Williams, while Jorden Myrie takes on the role of influential Liverpool musician and promoter Lord Woodbine.

The drama has been written by Jamie Carragher, whose credits include Succession, with The Crown director Christian Schwochow serving as showrunner and directing alongside Laura Lackmann. BAFTA-winning producer David Holmes is curating the music.

Beatles drama filming in Liverpool

Liverpool has naturally been chosen as one of the main filming locations for the series, with the city playing a central role in the band’s story before their move towards worldwide fame.

The latest scenes on Lord Nelson Street gave passers-by another glimpse behind the scenes of the production, with Mannion transformed into the young Lennon for filming close to one of Liverpool’s most recognisable landmarks.

Production on Hamburg Days has been taking place across Germany and Liverpool throughout 2026. A UK broadcast date has not yet been announced.
