One of Liverpool’s most famous parks has undergone a dramatic transformation as filming continues on a major new Channel 4 series starring Kit Harington, Paddy Considine and America Ferrera.
A huge film set has appeared inside Sefton Park, with towering structures, extensive fencing and barbed wire changing the appearance of the normally picturesque Liverpool park.
New images taken at the set today, Monday 21 September, show the scale of the production as work continues on Army of Shadows, a new six-part Channel 4 drama currently filming across Liverpool and several other locations.
The imposing, prison-style set began attracting attention from people visiting Sefton Park earlier this week, with a large watchtower and sections of barbed-wire fencing among the most noticeable additions. The Liverpool ECHO reported on the transformation on 18 September as preparations for filming got underway.
What is Army of Shadows?
Army of Shadows is a new six-part drama written by BAFTA-winning writer Ronan Bennett, whose previous credits include The Day of the Jackal, MobLand and Top Boy.
The series is being co-produced by STUDIOCANAL and Two Cities Television for Channel 4, with filming taking place across Liverpool, Manchester, London and Paris.
It boasts a major cast led by Paddy Considine, America Ferrera, Alex Hassell and Kit Harington, while Lisa Gunning is directing all six episodes.
The drama takes inspiration from Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1969 film and Joseph Kessel’s book Army of Shadows, which told the story of the French Resistance during the Nazi occupation of France in the Second World War.
Bennett’s new version takes the idea in a different direction, setting its story in an occupied Great Britain.
The series follows a former soldier known as Berry, who begins secretly assembling a resistance network. Among those drawn into the movement are a soldier, student, radiographer and journalist, while those opposing them include a powerful state and an American intelligence operative named Jessie.
That storyline could explain the striking fortified set currently standing in Sefton Park, although the production has not publicly revealed exactly what scenes are being filmed at the location.
Liverpool filming continues
Liverpool Film Office confirmed in July that the city was one of the main filming locations being used for the production.
The latest Sefton Park shoot adds to another busy period for film and television production across Liverpool City Region, with a number of major productions using locations throughout the area during 2026.
There is currently no confirmed broadcast date for Army of Shadows, with Channel 4 saying further details about the series will be announced in due course.
