The Salt and Tar Music Weekender festival launched in style with soul icon Billy Ocean and Liverpool legends The Real Thing. Friday night kept the momentum going as indie favourites The K’s had the crowd singing along to every track.
Saturday saw the Sugababes light up the open-air stage with a hit-filled set, while Sunday’s finale from Ocean Colour Scene, supported by Cast, Keyside, and The Solaas, brought the curtain down on a weekend that is quickly becoming one of the UK’s most exciting new music events.
Beyond the music, festivalgoers enjoyed a vibrant food and drink village offering everything from gourmet burgers and Greek street food to Indian vegan dishes. Street performers, glitter stalls, and a carnival atmosphere made Salt and Tar a standout summer celebration.
Cllr Marion Atkinson, Leader of Sefton Council, said:
“This weekend has truly shown what Bootle is capable of.
“Once again Salt and Tar has delivered a world-class experience and has brought a huge boost to our local economy and energy to our streets.”
Cllr Paulette Lappin, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Skills and Employment, said:
“The Salt and Tar Music Weekender proves what can be achieved when culture and regeneration come together.
“Events like this support our long-term vision for Bootle as a vibrant, sustainable and welcoming town centre.”
The weekend also coincided with Everton FC’s sell-out pre-season clash against AS Roma at the newly opened Hill Dickinson Stadium, attracting tens of thousands of fans. Bootle played a key role in hosting visitors, with Bootle New Strand train station and the town’s multi-storey car park acting as vital transport and parking hubs.
Thanks to enhanced travel links, secure parking, and shuttle services, the town’s infrastructure successfully supported both the matchday crowds and festival audience.
Cllr Marion Atkinson added:
“With the Hill Dickinson Stadium now open, Bootle is perfectly positioned to grow as a key travel and entertainment hub as well as being a thriving destination for sport, culture and entertainment.”
Looking ahead, Salt and Tar is set to become a key part of the Everton matchday experience, with plans for live screenings, food and drink events, and community activities.
This weekend’s success marks another step forward in Bootle’s regeneration journey — and sets the bar high for future events.
