One of the most recognisable figures ever to have served the British Royal Household, Paul Burrell, captivated guests in Liverpool on Friday as he attended an exclusive launch event to celebrate his latest bestselling memoir, The Royal Insider, hosted by Gemma Cutting and organised by Carolyn Hughes from Carolyn Hughes PR.
Held at Masons on Seel Street, the special afternoon welcomed more than 100 guests who enjoyed a champagne reception, a three-course lunch, live entertainment and a personally signed copy of Paul’s latest book before settling in for an engaging and revealing question-and-answer session hosted by Victoria Grimes.

Throughout the afternoon, Paul entertained the audience with fascinating stories from behind the Palace gates, drawing on his remarkable 21-year career in royal service. Guests were given a rare insight into the inner workings of the Royal Household as Paul reflected on his journey from Buckingham Palace footman to becoming Queen Elizabeth II’s personal footman before later serving as butler to the then Prince and Princess of Wales.
Following the separation of the Prince and Princess of Wales, Paul became Princess Diana’s personal butler, trusted confidant and close friend, remaining by her side until her tragic death in 1997. Speaking candidly, he shared touching memories of Princess Diana, recalling happier moments together while offering heartfelt reflections on one of the most extraordinary periods in modern royal history.
Paul also spoke openly about life beyond the Palace, discussing his health battles, High Court legal challenges and the intense media scrutiny he has experienced over the years. Joining him at the event was his husband, Graham Cooper.
During the afternoon, Paul spoke warmly of his affection for Liverpool, describing it as one of his favourite cities.

He said:
“We absolutely loved Friday’s book launch. The people of Liverpool are always so kind and welcoming and we simply love the city. At one point we even considered making Liverpool our home. It’s always a pleasure to come back and experience the warmth, culture, architecture and incredible people that make the city so special.”
Since leaving royal service, Paul has built an international reputation as an author, broadcaster and public speaker, offering audiences a rare behind-the-scenes perspective on life within the Royal Household and sharing personal stories from his years serving Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III, Princess Diana and Princes William and Harry.

Making the most of his visit to the city, Paul and Graham stayed in the spectacular penthouse suite at Ropewalks Hotel, where they woke to panoramic views across Liverpool’s iconic skyline bathed in glorious sunshine. The couple also enjoyed dinner at the newly opened CasaCillo on Duke Street before returning home to Cheshire.
Carolyn Hughes said:
“I have hosted many book launch events over the years including Patsy Kensit, Alastair Campbell, Davinia Taylor and many more. Paul was an absolute delight and he was genuinely thrilled to be in Liverpool and very much enjoyed meeting all of the guests who attended. Thanks to the team at Masons for amazing food and service on the day”.
Paul is the author of five books, including the No. 1 Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller A Royal Duty, which has sold more than three million copies worldwide. His latest memoir, The Royal Insider: My Life with the Queen, the King and Princess Diana, became an instant Sunday Times bestselling royal autobiography.
The Liverpool event provided guests with an intimate opportunity to hear first-hand from one of the Royal Household’s most trusted former members of staff. Combining royal history, personal reflection, humour and warmth, the afternoon proved to be an unforgettable experience for everyone in attendance and another successful chapter in Paul’s nationwide book tour.
The paperback edition of The Royal Insider: My Life with the Queen, the King and Princess Diana is now available to purchase from all major booksellers and online retailers.
