Merseyrail three peak charity team smash charity target

A seven-strong team from Merseyrail has raised more than £11,000 for charity after they completed the Three Peaks Challenge by rail at the weekend.

The amazing Merseyrail team were transported by train to climb Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis.

It’s the 21st event that the Railway Children charity has run, and over the course of that time thousands of pounds has been raised for well-deserving charities.

The money raised from this year will go to boost vital funds for the Railway Children charity, who help vulnerable children at risk here in the UK, India and Tanzania.

Chris Maher, Chief Financial Officer for Merseyrail and a member of the Three Peaks Challenge team, said:

“It was a fantastic event to be involved with and travelling by rail to each climb made it perfect for all of us rail workers.

“The climbing was really tough, but the team were great in helping each other and knowing that so much money had been donated really spurred us all on.

“We’d like to thank everyone who has donated so far, it’s very kind of you all. The money can make a truly positive difference in the lives of children across the world.”

The Merseyrail team had targeted to raise £8,000 but smashed that with £11,900 donated from more than 100 donors.

The Railway Children’s national target for this year is £180,000 with nearly £150,000 already donated.

Every year thousands of children across the UK, India and East Africa run away or are forced to leave homes that have become unbearable through poverty, abuse, violence and neglect. The Railway Children aim to get help and support to them as quickly as they can.

Reaching a child as soon as possible is crucial to making contact before an abuser, and before they become entrenched in street life. The Merseyrail team is supporting Railway Children to protect and prevent these youngsters living alone and at risk on the streets.
