As cycling fever builds ahead of the Tour de France stage arriving in the city next year, two of Liverpool’s biggest cycling advocates are backing a major charity bike ride this September.
Paralympic champion Lora Fachie and BAFTA award-winning TV presenter and actor Simon O’Brien are encouraging cyclists of all abilities to take part in the University Hospitals of Liverpool Charity bike ride.
Dubbed ‘Le Tour Merseyside’, the event on 6 September is raising funds to support patients, families and staff at the Major Trauma Centre at Aintree University Hospital.

The event will feature three route options, 33, 55, or 77 miles, taking riders through parts of the proposed Tour stage across the scenic countryside of Merseyside and Lancashire.
Lora, a seven-time Paralympic medallist who is visually impaired, said:
“Nothing beats the feeling of being on a bike, plus it’s great for your physical and mental health.
“You get a real sense of achievement and events like Bike Aintree are a great incentive to get on two wheels and give something back.
“Training for a race is great in the sunshine but not so easy in poor weather but knowing you are raising money for the trauma centre is a great motivator.”
Actor and Liverpool city region cycling and walking commissioner, Simon adds:
“What an amazing experience to start a race at Aintree Racecourse. The day was brilliant, lots of fun for participants and spectators alike.
“We’ve already had plenty of interest this year, so it will be bigger and better celebration of community, wellbeing, and inclusive cycling.”
The event will also include a free family fun day at Aintree Racecourse, featuring activities designed to promote mental health, wellbeing, and active lifestyles.

Aintree Major Trauma Centre to Benefit From Regional Tour Fever Fundraising
The upcoming international tournament presence provides an ideal platform to boost critical local medical funding initiatives.
