A new community lottery has launched in Liverpool, giving people the chance to win weekly cash prizes while raising money for charities and good causes across the city.
Liverpool Charity and Voluntary Services (LCVS) has launched the Liverpool Community Lottery as a new fundraising initiative designed to generate additional income for local charities, community organisations and other good causes.
Tickets cost £1, with players able to choose which participating local cause they would like to support when purchasing a ticket online or over the phone.
Weekly draws offer a top prize of £25,000, alongside prizes of £2,000, £250 and £25.
The lottery is being operated on behalf of LCVS by lottery management company Gatherwell, which runs similar community lotteries across the UK.
According to LCVS, Gatherwell-operated lotteries in Warrington, St Helens, Halton and Sefton have collectively raised more than £86,000 for local charities, community organisations and sports groups.
Good causes in Liverpool are being invited to register with the scheme and will receive 50% of the proceeds from every ticket sold specifically in support of their organisation.
A further 10% from each ticket will be placed into a central fund to support other good causes in Liverpool, with the remaining money contributing towards prizes and operating costs.
LCVS CEO Jeff Scales says:
“Liverpool Community Lottery is an exciting opportunity for organisations to raise funding to realise their ambitions. In an environment of increasing scarcity and competition for funding, the community lottery has the potential to tap into the goodwill that local people have towards local charities and community organisations.”
LCVS said it had considered the potential risks associated with gambling when developing the scheme and described community lotteries as a low-risk form of gambling.
The organisation also pointed to Gambling Commission research which it says indicates that people who participate in lotteries typically fall within the lowest-risk gambling typology.
