A special River of Light market is returning to Liverpool’s historic Cunard Building this October, bringing eight nights of independent shopping to the city’s waterfront.
Following a successful three-night run last year, the popular market has been extended for 2026 and will take place from Friday 23 October to Friday 30 October, between 4pm and 9pm daily.
Around 35 stalls will fill the Cunard Building each evening, showcasing a wide selection of products from local independent traders.
Visitors can browse everything from delicious treats and handmade arts and crafts to bespoke jewellery, unique gifts and much more, offering the perfect opportunity to support local businesses while enjoying one of Liverpool’s biggest cultural events.
The market is completely free to enter, with access available via the Strand entrance. An accessible entrance will also be available on the Brunswick Street side of the building.
Organisers are also welcoming applications from traders interested in taking part, with limited spaces still available. Anyone wishing to exhibit can email liverpoolmarkets@liverpool.gov.uk to register their interest.
The Cunard Building is one of the landmarks featured along this year’s River of Light trail and will host an illuminated artwork titled Coloured Peonies.
Explore the history of Cunard Building
Alongside the market, visitors will have the opportunity to discover more about one of Liverpool’s most iconic waterfront buildings through a series of behind-the-scenes tours.
The tours will offer a fascinating insight into the history of the Grade II* listed Cunard Building, including access to areas such as the historic luggage room and first-class safe.
Visitors can find further information and book tours through Ticket Quarter.
Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, said:
“River of Light is a highlight of our cultural calendar and one the whole family can enjoy.
“Following a successful debut last year, for 2026 we have extended the market, giving people the opportunity to buy from independent traders and perhaps purchase an early Christmas present.
“In addition to this, you can also combine a visit with a behind the scenes tour of Cunard Building, to learn more about the fascinating history of one of the world-famous Three Graces.
“By timing the market and the tours with the festival, we’re creating an even richer visitor experience that combines Liverpool’s history, culture, and creativity. It gives people the chance to immerse themselves in the heritage that has helped shape Liverpool’s internationally recognised waterfront.”
River of Light 2026
Now celebrating its ninth year, River of Light 2026 takes place from 23 October to 1 November, transforming Liverpool’s waterfront and city centre into an illuminated outdoor art gallery.
This year’s theme, Together, will see 13 artworks celebrating the power of light to bring people closer, creating a colourful and immersive experience for visitors of all ages.
The free light trail will operate each evening between 5pm and 9pm, giving visitors plenty of time to explore the installations and enjoy the special Cunard Building market.
