Liverpool is set to become a giant outdoor gallery this autumn as River of Light returns from 23 October to 1 November 2026, bringing 13 spectacular light installations to locations across the city.
This year’s festival will expand beyond Liverpool’s waterfront, taking visitors further into the city centre as part of a new-look trail running throughout the October half-term.
The theme for River of Light 2026 is ‘Together’, celebrating how art and light can bring people together through shared experiences.
Delivered by Culture Liverpool, this year’s programme will feature 13 artworks, including nine new installations alongside returning and previously announced pieces.
Among the new works is Together, a major new commission by artist Murugiah, created alongside Sam Wiehl and GloMoth. The large-scale projection has been developed with input from community groups across Liverpool and will illuminate the Wapping Dock Wall.
Visitors will also be able to experience Invisible Cities by Atelier Sisu, alongside Flower Power by Spectaculaires – Allumeurs D’Images and The Anooki by Inook.
Australian creative studio Amigo and Amigo will bring Unity to the city, while This is Loop will present Paradigm.
Other highlights include Colour Rush by Liz West, Today I Love You by Massimo Uberti, presented by Light Art Collection, and Coloured Peonies by TILT.
Completing the new additions is The Stars Come Out at Night by Stellar Creates.
The nine new installations join three works previously announced for the 2026 festival.
These include POP! by Gentilhomme, Dream Herd by Amigo and Amigo and Loop by Olivier Girouard and Jonathan Villeneuve.
With the trail extending beyond its traditional waterfront locations, organisers hope visitors will explore more of Liverpool while discovering the artworks.
Taking place throughout the autumn half-term, River of Light will also give families the chance to combine the free festival with Liverpool’s attractions, shops, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues.
River of Light 2026 runs from Friday 23 October until Sunday 1 November and is completely free to attend, with no booking required.
