A fresh, fully accessible weekend exercise initiative designed to inspire younger generations to embrace physical fitness has successfully debuted on Merseyside.
The newly established Millbrook Millennium Green junior parkrun is officially operational following a series of introductory trial events, which attracted over 50 enthusiastic young runners during its opening fortnight.
The athletic series, which is entirely free to enter, is scheduled to take place every Sunday at 9:00 am, navigating a designated 2km route situated at Millbrook Millennium Green on Kirkby Row.
While the outdoor event welcomes all community members, official timed results are exclusively issued to participants aged between 4 and 14, and runners under the age of 11 must remain accompanied by a supervising adult.
Pre-booking is not required for the weekend sessions, allowing families to simply arrive on the morning to run, jog, or walk the route.
To secure an official time, families must register with the national parkrun organisation online prior to the event and present their digital or printed personal barcode for scanning upon crossing the finish line.
Knowsley Council Expands Free Youth Fitness Infrastructure into the North Borough
The integration of this outdoor fitness series represents a deliberate expansion of structural health programs within the region, removing financial obstacles to youth athletics.
Cllr Shelley Powell, Knowsley Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities & Neighbourhoods, commented:
“I am thrilled that we have been able to secure another junior parkrun event for Knowsley.
“I have attended the Halewood event on several occasions and always loved it, so it’s great news that residents in the north of the borough will also be able to take part in an event local to them.
“It’s such a fun family activity but also a really great way to get kids active, improving health and wellbeing and with plenty of smiles along the way.”
The structured 2km grass and path course is tailored specifically to build physical stamina and self-esteem among local children, providing an inclusive environment where participants can progress at their own comfortable pace.
Volunteer Network Establishes Sustainable Sunday Morning Running Framework
The long-term sustainability of the weekly sports series hinges on a dedicated network of local stewards who oversee track safety, course directions, and electronic barcode recording.
Vicky Unsworth, Millbrook Millennium Green Junior Parkrun Event Director said:
“As someone who has grown up in Kirkby, I know how important it is for kids around here to have as many opportunities as possible.
“Parkrun is such a supportive and inspiring environment, and I have seen how much my own kids love being involved in it.
“I am proud to lead a team of amazing volunteers to deliver this opportunity for kids in Kirkby to get active and get into running.
“I can’t wait to see as many as possible at Milly on a Sunday morning.”
The introduction of the Kirkby event marks the latest expansion of this fitness movement within the borough, joining a robust network of established regional runs.
These include the senior 5km Knowsley Parkrun hosted at Stadt Moers Park every Saturday morning, alongside the existing southern junior parkrun circuit operating at Halewood Park on Sundays.
