An exciting project to transform the Brindley Theatre in Runcorn is making good progress ahead of its unveiling in the summer.
Part of the Reconnecting Runcorn programme, the Brindley Enhancement will see Runcorn Library incorporated into the building, together with a new cafe-bistro and an outdoor civic space on the Brindley Green, providing a more accessible and visible cultural destination.
The project is funded by the UK Government and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.
Current work taking place at the site includes a new Box Office, updated electrics and lighting, as well as flooring and ceiling works.
Interior decorating preparation is also currently underway.
A highlight of the enhancement is the installation of the new glazed facade, a striking architectural feature that wraps around the front of the building to create a warm and transparent welcome from the high street.
Designed to invite curiosity and connection, the glazing will showcase the interior’s feature lighting and activity, drawing visitors up through the newly envisioned Brindley Green and into the heart of the space.
Creating an Inclusive Green Space for Outdoor Performances

The Brindley Green project will see the grassed area become a welcoming, safe, and inclusive space with more accessible entrance points into the venue.
The landscaping of the green space will make it suitable for outdoor performances while significantly improving the vista across the town centre.
Since opening in 2004, the Brindley Theatre has become a key cultural asset to the town and has continued to steadily grow its customer base.
This extension will expand the current facilities to enable the diversification and ability to house a larger number of visitors, increasing local footfall and developing a more robust visitor economy.
A New Energy for the Runcorn Community
The transformation is viewed as a pivotal moment for the town’s regeneration and its cultural identity.
Cllr Laura Bevan, Halton Borough Council’s portfolio holder for Culture & Leisure services, said:
“The Brindley’s transformation is such an exciting moment for Runcorn.
“We’re turning a much‑loved venue into a real cultural hub that people will want to visit, enjoy, and feel proud of.
“As we prepare for it to open later this year, it’s going to bring new energy into the town, help boost the borough, and really show off what we’re aiming for culturally.
“It’s a big step forward for our community, and I can’t wait for everyone to experience it.”
The project remains on track for its scheduled summer opening, marking a significant milestone in the Reconnecting Runcorn programme.
By integrating the library and creating a modern, glass-fronted environment, the venue is set to become a more versatile space for residents and visitors alike.
