Ade Adepitan MBE and Great Britain wheelchair basketball international James MacSorley have joined the steering group for the IWBF Wheelchair Basketball European Championships 2027, which will take place in Liverpool next September.
The Wheelchair Basketball European Championships 2027 will be held at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena from 11–19 September 2027, bringing together 18 of Europe’s leading men’s and women’s national teams.

With qualification for the LA 2028 Paralympic Games at stake, the nine-day tournament will give British fans an opportunity to watch some of Europe’s best wheelchair basketball players competing on home soil.
Ade Adepitan to help raise the profile of wheelchair basketball
Former Paralympic medallist and television presenter Ade Adepitan MBE will bring his experience as both an elite athlete and disability advocate to the Championships’ steering group.
Ade won bronze in wheelchair basketball at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games before establishing himself as a familiar face on British television.
Throughout his career, he has championed disability representation and inclusion, making him an important addition to the group as organisers look to attract new audiences and challenge perceptions of disability in sport.
Ade Adepitan MBE said:
“Sport has a real power to change the way people think about disability. Wheelchair basketball is fast, physical and highly competitive, and I want more people to see that for themselves.
“I’m delighted to support the Championships and help raise the profile of the sport, while challenging some of the assumptions people still have about disability.”
James MacSorley to champion athlete experience
Great Britain wheelchair basketball international James MacSorley has also joined the steering group, with a particular focus on ensuring athletes have the best possible experience throughout the Championships.
James is a member of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Players’ Commission, representing Europe, and will bring valuable insight into the needs and priorities of players competing at international level.
James MacSorley said:
“I’m pleased to be joining the steering group and to have a chance to help shape the Championships from an athlete’s point of view.
“The experience players have at a major competition matter, both on and off the court, and I want to help make sure that’s a priority as plans develop.
“It’s also a great opportunity to bring wheelchair basketball to a wider audience and show what the sport is all about.”
Liverpool prepares to welcome Europe’s wheelchair basketball stars
The steering group will provide strategic oversight of the Liverpool Wheelchair Basketball European Championships 2027, helping guide preparations and ensuring the needs of athletes and spectators remain central to the event.
It will include representatives from Liverpool City Council, British Wheelchair Basketball, UK Sport and UKEL, alongside four independent members and an independent chair.
The Championships will showcase nine days of elite sporting competition while aiming to inspire greater participation in wheelchair basketball and increase visibility for disabled athletes.
With both Great Britain’s men’s and women’s teams competing in front of a home crowd, Liverpool audiences will have the opportunity to experience the speed, skill and intensity of international wheelchair basketball.
The tournament also represents an opportunity for Liverpool to strengthen its reputation as a host city for major international sporting events.
