Wirral parks gain national recognition with Green Flag Award

Two new names on the expanding list of Wirral parks set for a Green Flag Award in 2024 are Victoria Park in Tranmere and Warwick Park in Upton.

Those two places join the 29 other Wirral parks that have retained their accreditation for another year. The Green Flag, an international quality mark for parks and green spaces, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team responsible for maintaining the green space for the enjoyment of both visitors and residents.

Birkenhead Park and Wirral Country have also been given Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, for another year in recognition of the management and promotion of historic features in those parks.

New Ferry Butterfly Park and Woodchurch Holy Cross – managed by Cheshire Wildlife Trust and Holy Cross PCC, Woodchurch respectively – also achieved Green Flag Community Awards once again, making the total number of awards for Wirral sites 35 this year.

Cllr Liz Grey, Chair of the Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee for Wirral Council, said:

“It is a tremendous honour for Wirral to achieve so many Green Flag Awards, including Warwick Park for the first time and Victoria Park regaining its status. I would like to extend my thanks and offer my congratulations to all those involved.

“There isn’t another area in the North West that comes close to having so many Green Flag accredited parks and these prestigious awards really celebrate the continual work and effort put in by those who look after these recognised sites.

“It is the work of our Friends groups, volunteers and council staff that make awards like this possible but that also help to keep our parks and green spaces a wonderful and welcoming place for residents and all those that want to visit them.”

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd MBE, added:

“I would like to congratulate everyone involved in Wirral on their achievements in the Green Flag Awards.

“Parks provide a vital green space for communities to socialise, enjoy nature, for children to play safely and it provides important opportunities for park users to improve their physical and mental health.

“We know that staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that it maintains the high standards of the Green Flag Award, everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement. It is important that our free to use spaces are maintained to the Green Flag Award standard, making them accessible for all members of the community while ensuring the environment is protected.”

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
