Swimming facilities at Volair Halewood Leisure Centre are set to undergo a major refurbishment as part of the next phase of improvement works at the site.
The swimming pool will temporarily close from Monday 10 August 2026 to allow the upgrades to be completed safely and efficiently, with the facility expected to reopen in late October 2026.
The refurbishment forms part of a wider programme of investment at Volair Halewood, which is already benefiting from improvements to create a more modern and welcoming leisure centre for the local community.
Major Upgrades Coming To Halewood Swimming Pool
When the swimming pool reopens, members and visitors will be able to enjoy a range of improvements designed to enhance the overall experience.
The refurbishment will include the full replacement of the moveable swimming pool floor, helping to improve accessibility for swimmers of all ages and abilities.
The changing rooms and toilets will also be fully refurbished, alongside upgraded poolside showers, new poolside tiling and modern lighting throughout the swimming area.
The improvements are designed to create a brighter, more comfortable and contemporary environment for everyone using the facilities.
Volair members with swim-only memberships will have their Direct Debit adjusted to reflect the temporary closure of the pool.
Members will also have the option to continue swimming at other Volair facilities, including Volair Huyton, Volair Kirkby and Volair Stockbridge.
Affected members will receive further information directly from Volair with full details about the changes.
During the summer holidays, children and young people across Knowsley will also continue to have access to free swimming at Volair facilities in Huyton, Kirkby and Stockbridge. Free swimming will remain available at Halewood until the pool closes on 10 August.
Parents and guardians of children taking part in Volair’s Learn to Swim programme will receive separate updates about lessons during the refurbishment period.
Part Of Wider £30m Investment In Halewood
The swimming pool improvements are part of a wider transformation programme taking place at Volair Halewood, including internal and external upgrades and a major decarbonisation programme.
The energy efficiency improvements will help reduce long-term operating costs while supporting Knowsley Council’s ambition to reach net zero by 2040.
Previous investment at the centre has already delivered upgrades including new all-weather pitch facilities and a fully refurbished gym, with the swimming pool refurbishment marking another major stage in the centre’s modernisation.
Cllr Tony Brennan, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said:
“The refurbishment of the swimming pool facilities is a major element of the internal improvements that will be taking place at Volair Halewood.
“Although there will be some temporary disruption to users I would urge everyone to bear with us during these works as I’m sure people will be delighted with the end result!”

“We are delighted that the next phase of the modernisation programme is about to commence, following the recent gym and pitch investments at the centre already.
“During the pool refurbishment period our swim-only members will have the option to pause their membership fees or enjoy the fantastic swimming facilities at one our other centres within the borough.
“Likewise, those looking to access swimming including our free junior swimming initiative, will still be able to do so at our other centres throughout the summer.
“We’d like to thank members and customers for their understanding, patience and continuing support for the positive transformation of the facilities, which when complete will provide a significantly upgraded leisure venue for the local community.”
The wider investment in Halewood will see more than £30 million invested into the area over the coming years, funded through UK Government support, the City Region Sustainable Travel Settlement and developer contributions.
The programme aims to create a more sustainable neighbourhood with improved leisure facilities, stronger transport links and an enhanced retail offer for residents.
