Unlimited travel on Merseyrail for just £2 during weekends in January has been announced

This week Steve Rotheram, Liverpool City Region Mayor, has announced a special New Year ticket offer, allowing unlimited travel for just £2 a day at weekends during January.

Starting on Saturday, January 4, and end on Sunday, January 26, with tickets for children aged 5-15 costing just £1.

The reduced-price tickets have been paid for by the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority from funds recovered from train manufacturer Stadler. They are available on all Merseyrail lines.

The special weekend offer will allow passengers to travel across the region for a fraction of the normal fare.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region said:

“Making public transport more affordable and accessible is a key part of my mission to build a transport network for everyone. This £2 unlimited travel offer will help start off 2025 in the best way by helping people get around the Liverpool City Region without worrying about cost.

“Investing in new trains and infrastructure is about making life better for people—whether that’s getting to work, visiting family, or just enjoying a day out. We’ve capped bus fares at £2, protected the country’s most generous concessionary travel scheme, and delivered the UK’s first publicly-owned train fleet in a generation.

“I hope as many people as possible will take full advantage and use it to see the best our city region has to offer – from the coastline of Formby and New Brighton, to wonderful museums and cultural attractions in Liverpool city centre!”

The Combined Authority has been working together with Stadler, Merseyrail and Network Rail to improve the availability and performance of the new trains across the rollout period.

The move is part of a series of initiatives brought in by Mayor Rotheram to help reduce the cost of public transport in the city region. Measures include freezing ticket prices on Merseyrail, capping bus fares at just £2, offering unlimited daily bus travel for young people for just £2.20 and maintaining the country’s most generous concessionary travel scheme – giving local people travel pass 7 years ahead of the national scheme.
