Since opening its Liverpool site in 2022, Alcotraz has become a bucket-list experience for locals and tourists alike, attracting thousands of thrill-seeking ‘inmates’ each month. This summer, the notorious prison-themed cocktail bar is breaking new ground with the launch of Alcotraz: The Yard – a bold new outdoor experience where illicit fun meets immersive storytelling.
Exclusive to Liverpool and available for a limited time only, The Yard invites guests to step beyond the cell block and into the prison grounds, where contraband equals cocktails and the usual rules no longer apply. Hidden within a seemingly innocent “tool shed,” the bar serves up signature drinks disguised in everything from repurposed oil cans to modified prison boots – all while keeping the Alcotraz secret operation alive.

Part open-air bar, part immersive theatre, The Yard transforms a prison yard into a cinematic escape. Whether you’re flexing in the makeshift gym, shooting hoops on the basketball court, or plotting your next scheme from the bleachers alongside Inmate Cassidy’s crew, The Yard offers guests a hands-on, character-driven experience straight out of your favourite prison drama.
Inspired by iconic prison stories seen on screen – from Prison Break to Orange is the New Black and The Shawshank Redemption – Alcotraz has cemented itself as one of the UK’s most distinctive cocktail experiences. With six locations across the country, The Yard marks the brand’s first-ever outdoor venue, bringing something entirely new to Liverpool.
Entry to The Yard is free, with advance reservations required. Drinks and light bites are available for purchase using the venue’s exclusive currency – contraband cigarettes – keeping the theme immersive down to the smallest detail. The space can accommodate both small groups and private bookings, making it ideal for everything from casual get-togethers to one-of-a-kind celebrations.

Developed by Inventive Productions – the UK’s leading immersive hospitality group – The Yard joins a portfolio of experiential venues including the Wild West-inspired Moonshine Saloon (also in Liverpool) and the sci-fi fantasy world of Avora in London. Like its predecessors, The Yard invites guests to step into a living, breathing storyline where they become the stars of their own cinematic saga.
Sam Shearman, creator of Alcotraz ‘The Yard’ and founder of Inventive Productions, said:
“We are so excited to be opening our first-ever outdoor experience, especially in such an amazing city as Liverpool. We’re thrilled to be able to grow the Alcotraz brand further, and this new Liverpool site sees us experiment with really ambitious expansions to our unique storyline.”
