Community groups in Sefton will soon be able to apply for funding support as the area prepares to host the 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale Golf Club this summer.
The R&A has launched the Open Legacy Fund, designed to support projects that will deliver long-term environmental and social benefits for local communities after the championship takes place in July.
Not-for-profit community and voluntary organisations whose activities take place within Sefton and directly benefit residents will be able to apply for grants of up to £20,000 when the application process opens in May.
Community groups invited to apply for Open Legacy Fund
Projects applying for the funding will need to address at least one of four priority areas identified by Greenlinks sustainability programme, the sustainability initiative linked to The Open.
These focus areas include developing low-carbon solutions, supporting the move towards a circular economy, protecting and enhancing nature, and delivering meaningful social value for local communities.
Applications will be reviewed and scored by a panel made up of representatives from The R&A, Sefton Council and other local stakeholders, with successful applicants expected to be notified later in the year.
Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, Chief Championships Officer at The R&A, said the initiative is designed to ensure host communities benefit from the global sporting event long after the final round is played.
He said:
“The Open Legacy Fund is about ensuring that hosting The Open delivers tangible, long-term benefits for the local communities in which it is staged each year.
“In Sefton, we want to support projects that reflect local priorities, strengthen communities and contribute to a more sustainable future.
“We encourage community groups with strong ideas and clear plans to apply.”
Funding aims to leave lasting legacy after The Open
Leaders at Sefton Council have also welcomed the launch of the fund ahead of the championship’s return to Royal Birkdale.
Councillor Atkinson, Leader of Sefton Council, said the event presents a valuable opportunity for local residents and community organisations.
He said:
“The Open is an event of global significance, and its return to Royal Birkdale brings with it a fantastic opportunity for our communities.
“The Open Legacy Fund is a chance to support meaningful projects that will have a real and lasting impact on people’s lives here in the Sefton area.
“I would strongly encourage local groups to explore the fund and come forward with ideas that will help make a difference for years to come.”
The Open Legacy Fund has previously supported a range of projects when the championship was last held at Royal Birkdale in 2017.
Initiatives funded at the time included a training pathway scheme providing opportunities in the leisure and sports sector for residents not currently in employment.
Other improvements included upgrades to Birkdale Common, such as a new information noticeboard, an accessible boardwalk ramp, improved signage and boundary enhancements designed to make the area more welcoming and accessible for visitors and residents alike.
