The Magazine Hotel, an iconic pub in Wirral, has been named Wirral Pub of the Year by CAMRA! With a host of exciting new developments, including quality home-cooked pub food, a spruced-up beer garden, outdoor BBQs, and a beer and cider festival, the charming character pub is celebrating its latest award.
With a rich history and a prime location on the banks of the Mersey, The Magazine Hotel has garnered numerous accolades and has been highlighted in The Good Beer Guide. It is one of the most loved pubs in the area and serves fine cask ales. Under Steve and Mary’s management, it is expected to have many exciting new additions.
Renowned chefs Dean Griffiths and Andy Pilling have teamed up to provide delicious home-cooked meals, and ever since they launched, business has been booming. With years of combined experience, Dean worked as a head chef at The Wheatsheaf and Andy managed The Queens in New Brighton. Together, their dynamic team has created amazing Sunday roasts, burgers, and small plates!
Small plates like wings, pigs in blankets, scampi bits, and goat cheese bon bons are on offer for 3 for £16. The creative burgers and pub classics like steaks, gammon, and fish and chips are plentiful, and the Sunday roasts are disappearing quickly! It’s a great deal, with 3 courses available for just £18.99! A new menu will be introduced in April, and the kitchen will soon get a makeover.
Landlord Steve Brady said:
“I’m delighted that we’ve won CAMRA’s Wirral Pub Of The Year for 2024. I’m really proud of the many awards we’ve won, including the regional CAMRA awards and being one of their best pubs in the country. Our pub has so much character and is ideally located on the banks of the Mersey but we can’t just rely on that — we need to be constantly improving.”
“I started out as Head Barman in 1998 and became landlord in 2012. I’ve seen the pub go through so many changes such as different breweries, price and energy cost increases, recessions, lockdowns and even a fire but it’s stood the test of time. It was built in 1759 and has so much history — I’ve kept its character but have made ongoing improvements and adapted with the times.”
Given how competitive the industry is, Steve’s passion for The Magazine Hotel has allowed him to maintain its charm while bringing it into the 21st century. He recently celebrated 25 years at the pub, an incredible accomplishment. With another award to add to the three regional ones from 2021 to 2022, Wirral Community Pub in 2023, and many more, his 25th year there is sure to be a fantastic success.
The beautiful beer garden has been spruced up in preparation for the warmer months. In addition to its regular folk nights on Tuesdays and live music on Friday and Saturday nights, the venue’s revamp will include outdoor BBQs in the summer and a sizable beer and cider festival from July 4–7.
Steve summarised:
“Winning the award is a great start to the year and we’re looking forward to a great summer. The food has proven to be really popular and the beer garden is going to be perfect for al fresco dining during the summer months, as well as bbqs. I’m really looking forward to the beer and cider festival on the first weekend of July too — exciting times!”
