Legendary Liverpool Spot Shortlisted To Be Named the Nation’s Best

  • April 20, 2026
  • By Editor - Elliot Thompson

VisitEngland has announced the finalists for the tourism industry’s national Awards for Excellence, and one Liverpool attraction has made the shortlist.

The VisitEngland Awards for Excellence have been championing the best in England’s tourism industry for more than 35 years and celebrate quality, innovation, best practice and exceptional customer service.

Finalists represent the very highest standards across accessibility, accommodation, attractions, experiences, food and drink, and business events, showcasing the strength and diversity of English tourism.

Fresh from winning Large Visitor Attraction of the Year and receiving the International Tourism Award at the Liverpool Tourism Awards, The Beatles Story, located at the Royal Albert Dock, has now been shortlisted for a national award.

The Beatles Story’s General Manager, Mary Chadwick, said:

“We are absolutely delighted to be confirmed as finalists in the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2026 in the International Tourism Award category.

“Having won Gold in the same category last year, to once again be recognised at a national level, and to be the only business in the Liverpool City Region shortlisted this year, is a fantastic achievement and a proud moment for our whole team.

“This recognition reflects the passion, commitment and hard work that goes into delivering a world‑class experience for our visitors every day, and we are honoured to see that effort celebrated on a national stage.”

Decades of Cultural Heritage

Established in 1990, the museum is the largest of its kind and has immersed millions of visitors in the story of The Beatles over its 36-year history using a combination of recreated sets and impressive historic artefacts.

The attraction is guaranteed a Bronze, Silver or Gold award in the International Tourism Award category at June’s VisitEngland Awards for Excellence ceremony and is hoping to repeat last year’s Gold success in the same category.

VisitEngland Director Andrew Stokes said:

“These awards honour the very best businesses and individuals in tourism, who are the driving force in an industry that delivers growth to local economies across England.

“I thank them for their dedicated service, congratulate them on achieving finalist status and wish them every success.”

The National Shortlist and Economic Impact

The 53 finalists, selected following a rigorous judging process by handpicked tourism industry experts, will now go on to compete in 16 core categories at this year’s awards.

There will also be three special awards, including the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Tourism Award’, the ‘Travel Content Award’ and the ‘Tourism Superstar Award’.

The VisitEngland Awards for Excellence worked in collaboration with 21 local competitions across England with 369 winners automatically put forward for national recognition.

The Family Holiday Charity is the chosen charity for this year’s event.

Tourism is one of England’s largest, most valuable industries, supporting hundreds of thousands of small-to-medium-sized businesses, more than two million jobs and is worth £127 billion to the economy in England.

The 2026 BAFTA Television Awards served as a fantastic evening for Merseyside, with local talent securing several of the night’s most prestigious honours. Held at the Royal Festival Hall in London, the ceremony highlights Liverpool's continuing influence on the global stage. The drama series Adolescence was the primary catalyst for this success, providing the platform for multiple Scouse victories in the acting categories. How Liverpool actors stole the show at the BAFTAs Stephen Graham, originally from Kirkby, secured the award for Leading Actor. His win was a significant moment for both the actor and the city, marking his first BAFTA victory after a career spanning decades of acclaimed work. Graham, who also played a pivotal role in the creation of the series, has long been a vocal advocate for the North West and the creative potential within working-class communities. Joining him in the winner's circle was Christine Tremarco, who took home the prize for Supporting Actress. Tremarco, another Kirkby native, was recognised for her powerful performance in the same production. The double win for two actors who grew up in the same area of Liverpool was noted as a rare and proud achievement for the region. The evening's success extended to the Supporting Actor category, which was won by Owen Cooper. Although from nearby Warrington, Cooper has strong cultural ties to Liverpool and utilised his platform to pay tribute to the city’s musical and artistic heritage. His win further solidified the dominance of the drama Adolescence, which proved to be the most successful programme of the night. The rise of Merseyside drama on the global stage While not every nominee from the city walked away with a trophy, the representation was unprecedented. James Nelson-Joyce was nominated for Leading Actor for his role in the BBC drama This City Is Ours. His journey from Walton to the BAFTA red carpet was celebrated as a testament to the thriving talent pool within the city. Nelson-Joyce expressed his pride in representing his hometown, describing Liverpool as a place with an undeniable spirit that cannot be ignored by the industry. The 2026 awards reflect a broader trend of Liverpool being at the heart of the British television industry. With numerous high-profile dramas being filmed on location across the Merseyside region, the city is no longer just a backdrop but a primary source of world-class storytelling and acting talent. The evening concluded as a resounding validation of the creative contributions made by Scousers to the arts, proving that the path from the streets of Liverpool to the highest accolades in television is well-travelled and wider than ever.
