Knowsley Named Liverpool City Region Leader For Award-Winning Parks And Green Spaces

  • July 21, 2026
  • By Editor - Elliot Thompson

Knowsley has been recognised as the Liverpool City Region’s leading borough for award-winning parks per resident, with 21 green spaces receiving the prestigious Green Flag Award.

The achievement means Knowsley has the highest number of Green Flag-awarded parks per 1,000 residents across the Liverpool City Region, while also ranking second overall for the number of awarded green spaces behind Wirral.

The Green Flag Award celebrates some of the best parks and outdoor spaces in the country, recognising locations that are well maintained, environmentally sustainable and provide valuable facilities for their local communities.

Nearly 2,500 parks and green spaces across the UK currently hold Green Flag status, following independent assessments that examine the quality, management and accessibility of each site.

Knowsley’s Green Spaces Recognised For Community Value

Knowsley Council says the recognition highlights the hard work of council teams and local Friends Groups who help maintain the borough’s parks throughout the year.

Councillor Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods, said:

“It’s an honour to have such incredible green spaces in Knowsley, and its testament to the effort and hard work of council officers and the Friends Groups who work tirelessly come rain or shine.

“They keep these parks lovely and clean, so that our residents have a place to visit, take a moment and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

“I’m incredibly proud to be living in Knowsley, which is home to 21 Green Flag awarded parks and we’ll keep striving to add even more to our list.”

The council highlighted the importance of maintaining local parks, with green spaces providing benefits for physical and mental wellbeing while also helping to improve neighbourhoods and support local wildlife.

From woodland areas and community parks to historic sites, Knowsley’s Green Flag locations offer residents a range of places to enjoy nature, exercise and spend time outdoors.
