Speedo Mick to receive Liverpool's Citizen of Honour accolade

A local charity fundraiser, Speedo Mick, who has raised more than a million pounds for charity while sporting his Everton swimming briefs, will become a recipient of Liverpool’s Citizen of Honour accolade next week.

Michael Cullen, who is more popularly known as Speedo Mick, will be presented with the honour at Liverpool Town Hall by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Mary Rasmussen, on Thursday 9 May 2024.

Mick has climbed four mountains and swum the English Channel in addition to walking the length and breadth of the UK in little more than swimming trunks, including a journey from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

He has received nominations for his enormous fundraising efforts and his perseverance in overcoming obstacles, including storms like Storm Ciara in February 2020 and Storm Dennis a week later.

More than 120 organisations have benefited from his fundraising efforts, including mental health and wellbeing initiatives and charities that assist homeless and disadvantaged young people.

When asked about the award, Mick said:

“I am overwhelmed and extremely grateful indeed to be awarded the Liverpool Citizen of honour Award. I cannot receive a more meaningful award as it is from my hometown of Liverpool, and it is this that means the world to me.”

Citizen of Honour recognises individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to enriching the city’s image. It was introduced in 2008 and has recently been presented to poet and performer Levi Tafari and Professor Doctor Shiv Pande MBE for his services to medicine.
