5 Ways to Prepare Your Home for Liverpool’s Hot and Cold Summers

  • July 29, 2025

Liverpool summers are anything but predictable. One week it’s blazing sunshine and beach days at Crosby, the next it’s grey skies and jumpers back on. These temperature swings might be typical of the North West, but they can take a toll on your home (especially if you’re not prepared!)

If you’re a homeowner or a long-term renter, here are five simple and effective ways to keep your home comfortable, energy-efficient and stress-free throughout Liverpool’s famously unpredictable summer.

1) Get Your Boiler Checked While It’s Off

It might seem odd to think about your heating system when the sun’s out, but summer is actually the best time to get your boiler serviced. Most people only think about their boiler when the cold sets in, which is exactly when engineers are fully booked, and problems are most inconvenient.

Booking a summer boiler check means:

  • Shorter waiting times
  • Time to fix minor issues before they become major ones
  • Better energy efficiency when autumn arrives

Working with Liverpool Heating’s boiler specialists means your system stays safe, compliant, and ready to go when the next cold snap hits (even if that’s mid-July).

2) Improve Ventilation for Muggy Days

Hot spells in Liverpool tend to come with humidity, which can leave homes feeling stuffy and uncomfortable. Good ventilation helps regulate temperature and keeps air moving, and is particularly helpful in properties without air conditioning.

Here’s what you can do to improve ventilation in your home:

  • Open windows early in the morning or late at night to let cool air in
  • Install or check extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms
  • Use standalone fans near windows to push warm air out
  • Consider adding trickle vents to windows for continuous airflow

3) Seal Out Drafts (Even in Summer)

Draft-proofing isn’t just for winter. During cooler summer nights, unwanted drafts can lower indoor temperatures and cause your heating to kick in if your thermostat is set. They also allow warm air to escape when you’re trying to keep the place cosy during sudden cold snaps.

  • Use draft excluders at doors
  • Seal gaps around windows and floorboards
  • Check letterboxes and keyholes for airflow leaks

4) Switch to a Smart Thermostat

With the weather constantly shifting, a smart thermostat is your best friend. It helps regulate your home’s temperature more precisely and can learn your schedule to adjust heating and cooling automatically.

Some models allow you to:

  • Set different temperatures for different rooms
  • Monitor energy usage
  • Control your system remotely via the app

5) Insulate for All Seasons

Insulation isn’t just for keeping heat in during the winter. It also helps keep heat out during hotter days. A well-insulated home maintains a more stable temperature, which means less need for last-minute thermostat changes and potentially high energy bills.

To improve your home insulation, focus on:

  • Roof and loft insulation
  • Wall cavity insulation
  • Pipe lagging to prevent condensation
  • Thermal blinds or curtains to block heat from windows

Make the Most Of Your Merseyside Home

Liverpool’s summers might be unpredictable, but your home does not have to suffer because of it. A little preparation, such as booking a boiler service with a trusted local engineer, improving ventilation, and sealing drafts, can make a big difference.

If you are looking to keep your home comfortable no matter the weather, these simple steps will help ensure it is ready for anything the season brings. As you know, summer in Liverpool does not always mean sunshine, but it always pays to be prepared.
