Liverpool City Council is rolling out a major lighting upgrade this week, bringing smarter, greener streetlights to the area surrounding Bramley Moore Dock.
Phase one of the works, delivered by contractor McCann, will take place from Monday 20 October to Tuesday 11 November, covering 11 key streets that connect the city centre to the new Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The upgrade responds to increased demand and changes in road use linked to events at the new stadium. To support the improvements, the Council’s Cabinet has allocated £1.5 million in funding for the installation of modern LED lighting columns connected to a Central Management System (CMS).
The new lighting will enhance safety and visibility for all road users, both on event days and throughout the year, while ensuring energy efficiency and sustainability.
Through the CMS, faults can be detected remotely, reducing the need for regular inspections and speeding up repairs. The system also allows for lights to be dimmed when roads are quieter, such as late at night, helping to lower energy use and carbon emissions.
Phase two of the project will extend the upgrades into the Ten Streets area, with works scheduled to run from 4 to 18 November.
Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity said:
“These upgrades are a vital step in making Liverpool’s waterfront safer, smarter and more sustainable.
“We’ve listed to residents and stakeholders, and we’re delivering lighting that meets the needs of a growing city, enhancing visibility, reducing energy use, and supporting our commitment to achieving net zero.”
Waterfront Councillor, Dave Hanratty, said:
“I welcome this investment by the Council, which is much needed in the area.
“Residents and visitors have raised concerns over the lack of effective street lighting in the area due to its historic nature, and this upgrade will make a safer environment in an expanding residential area.”
