For the next three years, the Salt & Tar Comedy Weekender will be run by Big Comedy UK, which is run by Bren and Val Riley, a husband and wife team who also put on the Southport Comedy Festival every year.

Salt & Tar is a brand-new outdoor event space in Bootle, right behind the Strand Shopping Centre. It can be used for a variety of events.

The new place for big and small events in Sefton is Salt & Tar. Their 2024 events programme has a lot of different kinds of fun things to do, like comedy shows, music concerts, and street food festivals.

Big Comedy UK is excited to be working with Sefton Council on this fun project after the success of the first comedy weekender last year.

Last year, hundreds of people came to Salt & Tar to see some of the best performers in the UK. Comedian and TV star Chris McCausland from Liverpool was there, as well as Irish comedian Jason Byrne, who is known as the “king of live comedy,” and stars from Mock the Week and Live at the Apollo, Jo Caulfield and Scott Bennett.

The stars for this year’s Salt & Tar Big Comedy Weekender are being booked by Big Comedy UK. The event takes place over the May Bank Holiday weekend, from Friday, May 24, 2024, to Sunday, May 26, 2024.

Bren Riley of Big Comedy UK said:

“We are really excited to have been awarded the contract to organise the Comedy Weekender in Bootle for the next three years.

“Last year was the first time the event happened and it was an amazing success. It was a really special atmosphere.

“We hosted some superb acts, and it was fantastic to see so many people from Bootle, and beyond, having such a great time.

“Salt & Tar is a brilliant new events space with so much potential, which is really putting Bootle on the map.

“It is all about establishing Salt & Tar. When Camp & Furnace first opened in Liverpool people were asking ‘what is it?’ but it’s iconic now. That same situation applies to Salt & Tar now, and this shows just what is possible.

“It is all about establishing the site as a brand new events space, somewhere local people can become really proud of.

“We are looking forward to revealing this year’s headline acts in the coming weeks.

“As well as the big names, we will also have our Family Fun Days returning again this year, along with a very special event that local people can get involved with – we’ll reveal more on that soon.

“Please keep an eye out on the Salt and Tar website along with our Big Comedy UK social media pages for some big announcements on this year’s performers.”

Big Comedy UK has been shortlisted in the 2024 Liverpool City Region Culture and Creativity Awards, which take place on Thursday 7th March 2024.

They won the Sefton Business In The Community Awards at the 2023 Pride of Sefton Awards last year.
