A rare collection of Beatles photographs and personal letters written by the band’s five original members is set to go on display at Hamburg’s City Hall this week.
Entitled Harbour Cities-Global Stages, the exhibition celebrates the Liverpool City Region’s role as the official partner for Hamburg’s annual port festival, Hafengeburtstag.
The free exhibition, running from 7–25 May at the Rathaus, features unique historical artefacts, including the only known letter co-authored by John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
Visitors can also view the first photograph of the core trio performing together and gain insight into the band’s 1960–62 residency along the Reeperbahn, which laid the foundations for their global stardom.
Strengthening International Ties
The unveiling coincides with a high-level business and culture delegation from the Liverpool City Region heading to the Hanseatic city.
During the visit, a Mayoral Joint Declaration of Intent will be signed to promote long-term cooperation in maritime, economic, and educational sectors.
The partnership also extends to future technology, with a new agreement to share best practices regarding AI development.
Key regional organisations, including the University of Liverpool and the STFC Hartree Centre, are joining the delegation to foster innovation alongside major tourism attractions like The Beatles Story and The Cavern.
A Shared Cultural History
The exhibition highlights the deep parallels between the two maritime giants, covering themes from port influence to a mutual passion for football.
A specific spotlight is shone on 1970s legend Kevin Keegan, who famously moved from Liverpool FC to Hamburg SV.
The timing is particularly significant as Hamburg is currently filming Hamburg Days, a new BBC series exploring The Beatles’ early years.
Dr Peter Tschentscher, First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, commented:
“Both Hamburg and Liverpool have a long maritime tradition that has shaped our economies, cultures, and citizens’ mindsets.
“Both cities are diverse, cosmopolitan, and connected to the world.
“They honour their traditions while, as modern metropolises, embracing innovation and progress.
“One of the special bonds between our cities is The Beatles, who are from Liverpool and launched their global career with legendary performances on Hamburg’s Reeperbahn.
“I am delighted that Liverpool is the partner region for this year’s Port Anniversary, which will allow us to strengthen our ties.”
The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority is currently exploring options to bring the exhibition back to the UK later this summer.
