Beneath the Merseybeat: Liverpool Black Hit Parade, an evening of music and discussion with special guests panel takes place this Sunday.
‘A juke box journey’ through the styles and sounds of Liverpool’s Black music history – doo-woop, rhythm & blues, soul, funk, disco, reggae and hip-hop.
The event forms a part of the ‘ON RECORD’ line-up – a brand new programme celebrating and exploring Black music on Merseyside running from October 24th – November 7th.
ON RECORD returns in 2021 for the second year with a raft of brand new in-person, online and audio commissions looking at the impact of Black music on the city region’s communities over the past 70 years.Â
The Liverpool Black Hit Parade was inspired by our ‘Beneath the Merseybeat‘ podcast series and ‘Next Stop New York‘ project which launched in 2015 as part of the Liverpool International Music Festival, exploring these same themes.Â
NSNY included an art exhibition – including archive photography and new work, a party inspired by these sounds, two days of panel discussions with over 50 guests (from which some of this audio is taken) and a marketplace selling posters, records and more.
Since then, we have produced a number of art exhibitions, talks and Q&A’s, as well as collaborating with young Liverpool-based musicians – all exploring how Black American, African and Caribbean music found its way to Liverpool post-war, and the impact of these sounds on Liverpool, its community and the city’s musical output.
