Filming for the upcoming Agatha Christie drama Hercule has continued across the Liverpool City Region, with new scenes captured at St George’s Hall and Hamilton Square.
The six-part BBC and BritBox series stars Edward Bluemel as Hercule Poirot and has been filmed primarily in Liverpool throughout the summer. The production explores the famous Belgian detective earlier in his story and draws on three of Agatha Christie’s early works.
New images offer another behind-the-scenes look at the production as filming moves into its next block.
Hercule filming at St George’s Hall
The latest filming has seen production return to one of Liverpool’s most recognisable landmarks, St George’s Hall.
Images captured the cast and crew around the historic building during filming, with actors in period costume and production equipment set up outside the hall.
James Nesbitt, Henry Ashton, and Calvin Demba were among the cast members reported to be on set during the St George’s Hall filming.
All three have previously been officially confirmed as part of the Hercule cast alongside Edward Bluemel, James D’Arcy, Phil Dunning, Jack Gleeson, Tamsin Greig, Guy Remmers, Rebecca Rittenhouse and Mawaan Rizwan.
Edward Bluemel spotted filming in Hamilton Square
Filming also moved across the Mersey to Hamilton Square in Birkenhead, a location which has already featured prominently during production of the new series.
The latest images show Edward Bluemel in costume as Poirot during filming around the square, while our photographer also reported Henry Ashton was involved in the scenes.
One of the most noticeable additions to the location was a period-style telephone box installed as part of the set.
Scenes were filmed around the telephone box with a number of supporting artists also involved, as the historic surroundings of Hamilton Square were once again transformed for the period production.
It isn’t the first time Hercule has used the area. Earlier in September, Explore Liverpool captured filming in Hamilton Square involving James D’Arcy, including scenes featuring a bicycle and a stunt double.
New director takes over for next Hercule episodes
The latest filming also marks a change behind the camera.
Chanya Button is directing the middle two episodes of the six-part series, following Jonny Campbell, who directed episodes one and two. Alrick Riley will then direct the final two episodes.
Button’s previous television credits include Doctor Who and Code of Silence, while writer Benji Walters, whose credits also include Code of Silence, has written the new series.
What is the new Hercule series about?
Produced by Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited, Hercule consists of six hour-long episodes and will offer a new look at one of Agatha Christie’s most famous characters.
Rather than simply retelling Poirot’s later adventures, the series will explore the detective as a man and portray Britain during the period between the two World Wars.
Three early Christie stories will form the basis of the series, while viewers will also see Poirot develop relationships with characters who become important figures in his life, including Captain Arthur Hastings and Scotland Yard’s James Japp.
Liverpool has played a major role in bringing that world to the screen, with the Liverpool Film Office confirming in August that production had begun in the city.
With filming continuing at locations including St George’s Hall and Hamilton Square, the latest images provide another glimpse at how the Liverpool City Region is being transformed for the new adaptation.
Hercule is due to arrive on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK and BritBox in North America in 2027.
