National Museums Liverpool has been shortlisted for the Kids in Museums Family Friendly Museum Award From Home, for their lockdown activities project.

National Museums Liverpool has been recognised for My Home is My Museum, a project that has given children the opportunity to curate their own exhibition and encourage them to learn what museums and galleries do on a day-to-day basis. Children were asked to put together a list of up to 10 items or artistic creations that represent their life and the important people in it. They then had to write a short description about the objects or artworks, why they were chosen and the exhibition as a whole, before designing an eye-catching poster and uploading a ‘promotional’ video to social media saying why it would be a must-see exhibition.

A few lucky children will get to have their exhibitions featured in a special digital exhibition online. They will also get to spend an afternoon with a top curator who will share all their tips about putting together a blockbuster exhibition, along with a behind the scenes tour of World Museum or the Walker Art Gallery.

Director of National Museums Liverpool, Laura Pye said:

“We are proud to be shortlisted for the Family Friendly Museum Award From Home for the Best Social Media activity. We are up against some fantastic museums who came up with innovative online activities for families during lockdown.

“Families across the country have got involved in the My Home is My Museum project, with a whole host of objects and artworks being curated. Unique objects and artworks making their way into the exhibitions include, handmade pinecone animals, artworks inspired by world famous artists, objects from museums they have visited all over the country, children’s first and favourite teddy bears and even a baby scan from one very happy big sister to be.

“The detail and thought process these children have put into their personal exhibition is outstanding, we wish they could all go on display in our venues.”

There is still time to enter your personal exhibition in the My Home Is My Museum project. The deadline for entries is Sunday 16th August 2020. Find out more information on how to enter here . #MyHomeIsMyMuseum.

National Museums Liverpool is vying against four other museums in the Best Social Media Activity category.

Over the summer holidays, family judges will try out all the activities and their feedback will decide a winner and highly commended award for each category. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in October.

Kids in Museums has run a prestigious annual award for the past 15 years, recognising the most family friendly heritage sites in the UK. This year, the charity asked families and museums to vote for what they thought was the best online activity for families during lockdown. A panel of museum experts whittled down over 400 nominations to a shortlist of 26 museums.

The Family Friendly Museum Award From Home has been made possible by funding from Arts Council England.
