Mersey Tunnels become part of Gotham City as Batman filming returns

Merseyside is once again being transformed into Gotham City as filming continues for the highly anticipated sequel to The Batman.

Production crews have returned to the Queensway Tunnel this week, with cameras capturing further scenes in and around the historic route connecting Liverpool and Birkenhead.

Filming activity was reported around the tunnel on Tuesday night, with additional photography expected to continue throughout the week. The latest shoot follows several sightings of crews and Gotham-themed vehicles across Merseyside in recent months.

The Queensway Tunnel has already featured during production for The Batman Part II. Crews were seen around the Liverpool entrance near St George’s Hall in May, while further activity took place at the former tunnel entrance on Rendel Street in Birkenhead earlier this month.

A vehicle carrying Gotham City Police Department branding was also spotted at the Birkenhead location, offering another glimpse of how Merseyside is being used to recreate the fictional city.

The filming coincides with a series of scheduled overnight closures of the Queensway Tunnel. Merseytravel has listed closures between 9pm and 6.30am each night from Monday 20 July until Saturday 25 July for essential maintenance work.

Motorists travelling between Liverpool and Wirral during these times are advised to check the latest travel information before setting off.

Liverpool is no stranger to the world of Batman. Several well-known landmarks appeared in Matt Reeves’ first film, The Batman, which was released in 2022.

St George’s Hall, the Walker Art Gallery, County Sessions House, Anfield Cemetery and the Royal Liver Building were among the locations used to help create the dark and atmospheric streets of Gotham City.

Robert Pattinson is set to return as Bruce Wayne and Batman in the follow-up, with Matt Reeves once again directing. The sequel is currently expected to arrive in cinemas in October 2027.

The latest activity adds another major Hollywood production to Liverpool City Region’s growing list of film and television credits, with the area’s architecture, roads and historic landmarks continuing to attract productions from across the world.
