Matt McManamon pays tribute to hometown with new single "Meet Me By The River"

Matt McManamon is back with the affecting new single “Meet Me By The River” a paean to his hometown of Liverpool, the release arrives today with news of a headline date in the city, as well as a mini tour of the UK this November.

“Meet me by the river Mersey… maybe this time I can change your mind” coos McManamon, his distinctive scouse brogue aching with a forlorn tenderness. A moving new single that finds McMananamon in reflective mood, “Meet Me By The River” is a melodic, melancholy ode to lost loves in Liverpool. As Matt reminisces:

“I wrote this song as somewhat of a homecoming anthem or perhaps homesick anthem after some years in London during my 20s. As with many songs in the past 2 years, its meaning has evolved, and now living in Ireland I feel even more drawn to the need to revisit those streets where I grew up and where my musical influences were first formed. I wanted this song to almost be a love letter to Liverpool and highlight how I missed the place, this also accidentally turned out to be an ambiguous song and there is a hidden meaning behind it, but I’m not going to divulge that…..yet!”

“Meet Me By The River” is taken from McManamon’s stately debut solo album: ‘Scally Folk’ (out now, via Fretsore Records). Stepping away from the Ska-addled sounds of his former band The Dead 60s, it’s an album that sees McManamon retracing his formative years, with previous singles “Every Time I Close My Eyes” and “Jumpin’ The Gun” among its many highlights.

“Meet Me By The River” was recorded at the Transmission Rooms Recording Studio, Drumlish, Co Longford, Ireland and was produced by the celebrated Mick Cronin (Shane MacGowan, Kodaline).  Guest musicians include Vinny Redmond (Angel Pier), Enda Mulloy (Biblecode Sundays), Dave Cox (Ragdoll, Andy Taylor Duran Duran) on keys, plus additional contributions from Andy Nolan (Shane MacGowan & The Popes), Kane O’Rourke (Nathan Carter, Derek Ryan)  and John Murry (critically acclaimed American singer/songwriter), with percussion by Cronin.

Matt McManamon is the former vocalist and songwriter of The Dead 60s. Releasing their s/t debut in 2005, the band scored 5 UK top 40 hits and surpassed over 100k sales in the UK alone. During his tenure as frontman, McManamon toured with the likes of Morrissey, Kasabian, and Deltasonic label mates The Coral, appearing on stages from Glastonbury to Top of the Pops. Prior to launching his solo career, Matt also toured with The Specials as their live guitarist. Returning with his first music in nearly 15 years, Matt McManamon released his debut solo album: ‘Scally Folk’ earlier in 2021.
