Liverpool’s iconic waterfront was transported back in time today, becoming a sleek recreation of historic New York City for the filming of a new television drama.
A Woman of Substance follows the inspiring journey of Emma Harte, a destitute parlour maid from rural Yorkshire who climbs the social ladder to become a powerful businesswoman.

The series is based on Barbara Taylor Bradford’s bestselling novel, which first captivated audiences 40 years ago as Channel 4’s most successful drama at the time. This new eight-part adaptation, also set to air on Channel 4, began filming in Yorkshire in April, with Vera star Brenda Blethyn taking on the lead role.
Today’s shoot in Liverpool featured eye-catching set pieces, including bright yellow cabs and vintage cars with New York license plates parked outside the Royal Liver Building. Film crews were busy on location this morning capturing scenes for the upcoming series.

A Woman of Substance is written by Katherine Jakeways and Roanne Bardsley and produced by The Forge Entertainment, part of Banijay UK. The cast includes Brenda Blethyn as the older Emma Harte and Jessica Reynolds portraying her younger self.
